Erkrath
Erkrath () is a town in the district of Mettmann, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Geography Erkrath is situated on the river Düssel, directly east of Düsseldorf and west of Wuppertal, close to the famous Neandertal. It has two stations, Erkrath station, which is served by Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn line S 8, and Erkrath Nord station, which is served by S-Bahn line S28 (Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn), S 28, both at 20-minute intervals. History In that part of Neandertal, which is located in Erkrath, in the summer of 1856, quarry workers discovered the fossilised remains of what became known as the Neanderthal man or ''Homo Neanderthalensis'' in Feldhof cave. The name Erkrath was first mentioned in 1148. Erkrath received town rights in 1966. In 1975, the municipality of Hochdahl was incorporated into Erkrath. Düsseldorf-Unterbach
Unterbach is a quarter (''Stadtteil'') of Düsseldorf, part of Borough 8. Until a local reorganisation in 1975, it was a part of Erkrath, Germany. A portion of the pre-1975 Unterbach remains as the quarter of Erkrath-Unterfeldhaus. The eastern end of the borough of Düsseldorf-Vennhausen was attached to Unterbach during the reorganisation since it was already culturally associated with Unterbach. History The name of the local part comes from the knights van Unterbeke, whose seat was the House of Unterbach – an old water castle, first mentioned as seat of the knights in 1169. The gallery of the lords of the House of Unterbach and their coats of arms are to be discovered elsewhere in Unterbach on the monument, which also serves as homeland and war memorial. The columns of the monument bear the names in time-correct sequence in stone. Erkrath Station
Erkrath station is a through station in the town of Erkrath in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. It has two platform tracks and it is classified by Deutsche Bahn as a category 5 station. History The station was opened along with the Düsseldorf–Elberfeld railway from Düsseldorf to Erkrath by the Düsseldorf-Elberfeld Railway Company on 20 December 1838. The line between Erkrath and Hochdahl has a gradient of 3.33% and rises 82 m in about 2.5 km. For more than one hundred years, this was the steepest main line in Europe. For many years trains had to be hauled by cable, originally driven by a stationary steam engine. A few months later haulage by cable attached to a stationary steam engine was changed to haulage by cable attached via pulleys to a locomotive running downhill on an additional track. Mettmann (district)
Mettmann () is a Kreis (district) in the middle of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Neighboring are the Ennepe-Ruhr, Rhein-Kreis Neuss, Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis and the district-free cities Cologne, Leverkusen, Wuppertal, Solingen, Düsseldorf, Duisburg, Mülheim, Essen. S8 (Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn)
Line S 8 is an S-Bahn line operated by DB Regio on the Rhine-Ruhr network. It runs from Hagen Hauptbahnhof in the west to Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof in the east via Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof, Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof and Neuss Hauptbahnhof. It is operated between Düsseldorf and Wuppertal-Oberbarmen station at 20-minute intervals using class 422 electric multiple units. One out of three trains continues to Hagen, running hourly. An S 9 service and three Regional-Express services (Wupper-Express, Rhein-Münsterland-Express and Maas-Wupper-Express) also operate between Wuppertal-Vohwinkel and Hagen each hour. The S28 ''Regiobahn'' is a S-Bahn line in the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn network. It is operated by '' Transdev Rheinland GmbH'' as a subcontractor of '' Regiobahn Fahrbetriebsgesellschaft mbH'' (''Regiobahn'' for short), who is the PSO operator on behalf of Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR). The line begins in Wuppertal Hauptbahnhof, then uses the branch line via Mettmann Stadtwald; then it runs through Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof branching off to Kaarst after passing through Neuss Hauptbahnhof. Its western terminus is Kaarster See. The line is operated using Integral S5D95 DMUs at 20-minute intervals, with only two trains an hour running between Mettmann and Wuppertal. Thomas Allofs (born 17 November 1959) is a German former professional footballer who played as a striker. The younger brother of another footballer, Klaus Allofs, he was a prolific goalscorer, scoring nearly 200 overall goals as a professional, always playing in the Bundesliga (a brief spell in France notwithstanding).
