Eric Filby
Eric John Filby (31 May 1917 – 9 December 2004) was a male English international table tennis and lawn tennis player. He won a bronze medal at the 1938 World Table Tennis Championships in the men's doubles with Hyman Lurie. In 1950 he moved from Norfolk to Croydon. Filby played in the 1955 Wimbledon Championships – Men's Singles. World Table Tennis Championships
The World Table Tennis Championships are table tennis competitions sanctioned by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF). The World Championships have been held since 1926, biennially since 1957. Five individual events, which include men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's double and mixed doubles, are currently held in odd numbered years. The World Team Table Tennis Championships, which include men's team and women's team events, were first their own competition in 2000. The Team Championships are held in even numbered years. In the earlier days of the tournament, Hungary's men's team was a dominant force, winning the championships 12 times. This was followed by a short period of dominance by Japan in the 1950s. Table tennis, also known as ping-pong and whiff-whaff, is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball, also known as the ping-pong ball, back and forth across a table using small solid rackets. It takes place on a hard table divided by a net. Except for the initial serve, the rules are generally as follows: Players must allow a ball played toward them to bounce once on their side of the table and must return it so that it bounces on the opposite side. A point is scored when a player fails to return the ball within the rules. Play is fast and demands quick reactions. Spinning the ball alters its trajectory and limits an opponent's options, giving the hitter a great advantage. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to manoeuvre the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. Hyman Lurie
Hyman Lurie (1918–1982) was a male English international table tennis player. Table tennis career He won a bronze medal at the 1938 World Table Tennis Championships in the men's doubles with Eric Filby. One year later he won double bronze at the 1939 World Table Tennis Championships by partnering Ken Hyde in a men's doubles and being part of the men's team, in the Swaythling Cup with Ken Hyde, Ernest Bubley, Ken Stanley and Arthur Wilmott. Personal life Hyman ran his father's Barber Shop on Elizabeth Street in Manchester. The shop was opened by Israel Lurie and it was the first to serve ladies in Manchester. He was Jewish. In the 1955 Wimbledon Championships men's singles event, Tony Trabert defeated Kurt Nielsen in the final, 6–3, 7–5, 6–1 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title. Jaroslav Drobný was the defending champion but lost in the quarterfinals to Tony Trabert.
