Borough Of Erewash
Erewash () is a local government district with borough status in Derbyshire, England, to the east of Derby and the west of Nottingham. The population of the district as taken at the 2011 Census was 112,081. It contains the towns of Ilkeston, Long Eaton and Sandiacre and fourteen civil parishes. The borough was formed on 1 April 1974 by the merger of the Borough of Ilkeston, the Long Eaton urban district and part of South East Derbyshire Rural District. The borough council's operations are split between Ilkeston Town Hall and Long Eaton Town Hall. Erewash Borough has military affiliations with 814 Naval Air Squadron Fleet Air Arm based at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose and the Mercian Regiment of the British Army, as the successors to the local regiment the Sherwood Foresters Council Erewash Borough Council has been controlled by the Conservatives since 2003, with Carol Hart being leader of the council since 2017. Erewash Valley
The Erewash Valley is the valley of the River Erewash (pronounced ) on the border of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire as far as the River Trent. It runs along the boundary of the southern end of the Derbyshire hills and the more rolling Nottinghamshire country. It is on the edge of an area of great mineral wealth, particularly coal, extending from Yorkshire to Leicestershire. Industrial Importance It has long been an important transport route, with the Erewash Canal being built from the River Trent to Langley Mill in 1779, extended by the Cromford Canal in 1794 with a branch to Pinxton, where it was later joined by the Mansfield and Pinxton Railway in 1819. Later the Midland Railway built a connection from its line at Trent Junction to the Mansfield and Pinxton, and onward to Chesterfield, which has become known as the '' Erewash Valley Line.'' Etymology The approximate meaning of the name is not in doubt, but there is room for debate about the precise derivation and its connotations. Brewer gives the commonly accepted explanation that it comes from the Old English words ("wandering") and ("wet meadow"). This is accepted by Kenneth Cameron, a leading placename expert and Derbyshire specialist, who interprets the name as "wandering, marshy river". Gelling, who specialises in seeking precise topographical equivalents for toponymic elements, confirms that signifies a marshy meadow but gives only southern examples. Erewash Canal
The Erewash Canal is a broad canal in Derbyshire, England. It runs just under and has 14 canal lock, locks. The first lock at Langley Mill, Langley Bridge is part of the Cromford Canal. Origins The canal obtained its act of parliament in 1777 with John Varley (canal engineer), John Varley appointed as engineer and John and James Pinkerton the main contractors, it was completed in 1779 at a cost of £21,000 (£ in 2015). It was a commercial success from the start mainly transporting coal. The canal's success kept it going far longer than many of its contemporaries in the face of competition from the railways. When the Grand Union Canal Company took over the running of the Erewash in 1932 it was still a going concern. The canal was nationalised in 1947. By this time the closure of feeder canals resulting in a loss of trade and competition from other forms of transport was making itself felt and the last commercial narrowboat delivered its cargo in 1952.
