''Erebia melampus'', the lesser mountain ringlet, is a member of the subfamily Satyrinae of the family Nymphalidae. Distribution and habitat This European endemic species occurs in the Alps from the Maritime Alps to eastern Austria (France, Germany, Italy, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and Austria). It prefers grassy places, in woodland or in open areas, at an elevation of above sea level. Description The wingspan is 30–36 mm. These small butterflies have brown wings. Forewings show a postmedian band of orange oval to round markings containing small black spots. Hindwings have three or four postdiscal eyespots. Description in Seitz ''E. melampus'' Fuessl. Johann Kaspar Füssli, also written Johann Caspar Fuesslins or Fuessly (9 March 1743 – 4 May 1786), was a Swiss painter, entomologist and publisher. He was born in Zurich, the son of Johann Caspar Füssli (1706–1782) and Anna Elisabeth Waser. He was thus the brother of Henry Fuseli (Johann Heinrich Füssli, 1745–1825). He married twice: to Verena Störi in 1770, and Anna Elisabeth Kilchsperger in 1774. An eyespot (sometimes ocellus) is an eye-like marking. They are found in butterflies, reptiles, cats, birds and fish. Eyespots could be explained in at least three different ways. They may be a form of mimicry in which a spot on the body of an animal resembles an eye of a different animal, to deceive potential predator or prey species. They may be a form of self-mimicry, to draw a predator's attention away from the prey's most vulnerable body parts. Or they may serve to make the prey appear inedible or dangerous. ''Erebia'' is a Holarctic genus of brush-footed butterflies, family Nymphalidae. Most of the about 90–100 species (see also below) are dark brown or black in color, with reddish-brown to orange or more rarely yellowish wing blotches or bands. Friedrich Joseph Adalbert Seitz, (24 February 1860 in Mainz – 5 March 1938 in Darmstadt) was a German physician and entomologist who specialised in Lepidoptera. He was a director of the Frankfurt zoo from 1893 to 1908 and is best known for editing the multivolume reference on the butterflies and larger moths of the world ''Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde'' which continued after his death.
