Equestrian At The 2008 Summer Paralympics
Equestrian at the 2008 Summer Paralympics consisted of eleven dressage events. The competitions were held in the Hong Kong Olympic Equestrian Centre from 7 September to 11 September. Classification Riders were given a classification depending on the type and extent of their disability. The classification system allows riders to compete against others with a similar level of function. Equestrian classes were: *I, for riders with impaired limb function, or poor balance and good upper limb function *II, for riders with locomotion impairment *III, for blind riders with moderate locomotion impairment *IV, for riders with some visual impairment or impaired function in one or two limbs Events For each of the events below, medals were contested for one or more of the above classifications. The Hong Kong Sports Institute () is a sports institute located in Sha Tin, New Territories, Hong Kong. It is mandated to provide training to athletes, and also offers academic qualification in the field of sports training. The institute sponsors elite athletes and trains them as full-time employees, based on their talent and potential. The campus is located on reclaimed land on the bank of the Shing Mun River, next to the Sha Tin Racecourse. Hannelore Brenner
Hannelore Brenner (born 21 June 1963) is a German Paralympian dressage equestrian athlete. Life Brenner was born in Lüneburg Lüneburg (officially the ''Hanseatic City of Lüneburg'', German: ''Hansestadt Lüneburg'', , Low German ''Lümborg'', Latin ''Luneburgum'' or ''Lunaburgum'', Old High German ''Luneburc'', Old Saxon ''Hliuni'', Polabian ''Glain''), also called ... in 1963. Equestrian At The 2008 Summer Olympics
Equestrian competitions at the Beijing 2008 Summer Olympics were held from 9 August to 21 August at the Hong Kong Sports Institute and Sheung Yue River in Hong Kong. It was the second time that the equestrian events were hosted by a member of the IOC other than the member hosting the main games (although this time the events were technically held in the same country as the main games). Unlike 1956, however, the equestrian events were part of the main games, and were held within the same period. Angelika Trabert
Dr. Angelika Trabert (born 9 October 1967), is a German doctor and para-equestrian rider. She made her international debut in 1991, and went on to compete at five consecutive Summer Paralympics for her country, winning silver and bronze multiple medals. In addition, she was the 2009 European Champion in freestyle. Outside of the sport, she is an Anaesthetist who has worked internationally, including providing medical care in rural Africa. Career Angelika Trabert was born on 9 October 1967 in Frankfurt, Germany. She has dysmelia, a congenital disability which means that she was born without legs, and with only three fingers on her right hand. Simon Laurens
Simon Laurens (born 28 November 1967 in Saint Brélade, Jersey) is a British Para-equestrian who competed at the 2008 Summer Paralympics, held in Beijing, China. Sports career He started riding at the age of eight and competed in gymkhana and show jumping with his palomino Champagne, before taking up dressage whilst working with Gemma Green for nine years at her yard in Jersey. Laurens was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2004. Within two years he began competing for the Great Britain para dressage team. He won the National Grade III Disabled Dressage title in 2006 and 2007 and also won both team and individual freestyle golds at the 2007 World Para Championships. Ricky Balshaw
Ricky Balshaw, (born 10 November 1986) is a British para equestrian rider who represented Britain in the Beijing 2008 Paralympics, winning the silver medal with Deacons Georgi (now semi-retired). He also holds two world-championships and one European award. Biography Balshaw was born with cerebral palsy which has restricted the muscle movement in both his legs and hands. He also has very little natural balance. With what he does have, he has been taught through physiotherapy to walk with the aid of two sticks. When he was 4 years old, his physiotherapist recommended that he took up horse riding as a part of the physiotherapy. Balshaw, confused by what he had just heard decided to try it. Georgia Bruce (born 7 May 1981) is an expert in equine behavior and psychology. She specializes in the positive reinforcement based training method known as "Clicker Training". Georgia has written two books about clicker training horses and has also produced an Online Training Course on equine clicker training. Bruce gives lessons, clinics, trick shows and clicker training demonstrations around Australia. Her broad repertoire of horse training skills includes training trick horses, liberty horses, wild horses, starting young horses and retraining horses with problem behaviours.
