Ensuring Positive Futures
Ensuring Positive Futures (EPF) is an employability programme based in the UK that aims to support people living with HIV in the workplace. It is a partnership of HIV organisations, employers, trades unions and government which works together to challenge the stigma and discrimination that often accompanies HIV. It has been seen that with effective HIV medication, people living with HIV can live and work just like anyone else. The lead organisation in the partnership is the UK Coalition of People Living with HIV and AIDS, a charity which is run by and for people living with HIV, which aims to empower individuals who are HIV positive, and to give them a voice. The programme offers advice and guidance on employment issues, such as getting back into work, or staying in employment, and advice for people who may be facing discrimination. Employability
Employability refers to the attributes of a person that make that person able to gain and maintain employment. HIV Medication
The management of HIV/AIDS normally includes the use of multiple antiretroviral drugs as a strategy to control HIV infection. There are several classes of antiretroviral agents that act on different stages of the HIV life-cycle. The use of multiple drugs that act on different viral targets is known as highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). HAART decreases the patient's total burden of HIV, maintains function of the immune system, and prevents opportunistic infections that often lead to death. HAART also prevents the transmission of HIV between serodiscordant same sex and opposite sex partners so long as the HIV-positive partner maintains an undetectable viral load. UK Coalition Of People Living With HIV And AIDS
The UK Coalition of People Living with HIV and AIDS (UKC) was a United Kingdom-based organisation. Due to debt, it ceased operations at 5 pm on 25 July 2007. UKC was established in 1993 as a "not for profit" organisation run by and for people living with HIV. In its original form, it was led by peers who advocated on behalf of those who most required the help. The onus was on listening to what clients required and empowering them, thus giving them the skills to face further challenges rather than allowing them to become dependent of services. Its mission was to “to ensure the diverse voices of people living with HIV and AIDS could be heard.” It supported people living with HIV with advocacy and advice services, and later devised an employability programme called Ensuring Positive Futures which aimed to support people living with HIV in the workplace. HIV Positive
The human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV) are two species of '' Lentivirus'' (a subgroup of retrovirus) that infect humans. The European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) is one of the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIFs), which are dedicated to improving social cohesion and economic well-being across the regions of the Union. The funds are redistributive financial instruments that support cohesion within Europe by concentrating spending on the less-developed regions. HIV/AIDS In The United Kingdom
HIV/AIDS was first diagnosed in 1981. As of year-end 2018, 160,493 people have been diagnosed with HIV in the United Kingdom and an estimated 7,500 people are living undiagnosed with HIV. New diagnoses are highest in gay/bisexual men, with an estimated 51% of new diagnosis reporting male same-sex sexual activity as the probable route of infection. Between 2009 and 2018 there was a 32% reduction in new HIV diagnosis, attributed by Public Health England (PHE) to better surveillance and education. PHE has described an "outbreak" in Glasgow amongst people who inject drugs, and has campaigns targeting men who have sex with men in London and other major cities.
