Ensbury Park is a mainly residential suburb of Bournemouth, in Dorset, England. It includes the housing estate of Slades Farm and lies within the ward district of Redhill and Northbourne (ward), Northbourne and Redhill. Initial development Ensbury Park takes its name from the Saxon hamlet of Ensbury, a separate area altogether which lay a mile or so to the north. This hamlet, just east of Kinson, has now been more or less subsumed into the postwar suburb of Northbourne, Bournemouth, Northbourne but in the first half of the twentieth century, Ensbury Manor and Ensbury Farm constituted the borders of what later became the Ensbury Park district. In the 1920s Ensbury Park boasted a Ensbury Park Racecourse, racecourse, which also served as an aerodrome. For several years it was known as “Bournemouth Aerodrome” and was the venue for Air Race Meetings, though a series of fatal crashes at the Whitsun meet in 1927 led to its decline and eventual sale for housing development. Northbourne, Bournemouth
Northbourne is a suburb of Bournemouth, Dorset in England. It is in the north of the town and borders Ensbury Park. History Northbourne stands on what was once part of the Ensbury Estate one of the earliest settlements that sprung up along the River Stour before Bournemouth was founded. The historic Grade II Listed Dower House in Wimborne Road is to the west of the suburb. Northbourne became a post-war suburb of Bournemouth. Areas Hill View is an area of Northbourne. Glenmoor School
Glenmoor Academy is a secondary school for girls located in the Ensbury Park area of Bournemouth in the English county of Dorset. The school was first established in 1877 as Winton British School, educating boys and girls up to age of 13. In 1911 the school relocated to a site on Coronation Avenue which was split into Winton School (boys) and Moordown School (girls). Following a major reorganisation of schools in the area in 1957, The secondary section of Moordown School relocated to the current site on Beswick Avenue and was renamed Glenmoor School. Ensbury Park Racecourse
Ensbury Park Racecourse was a short lived horse racing and greyhound racing course in Bournemouth between the Kinson and Ensbury Park areas. Origins A new 88 acre aerodrome was constructed near Bournemouth at the end of 1917. The Royal Flying Corps together with a Wireless Telephony School moved in and it became known as RFC Winton. The aerodrome was vacated after the war by the RAF and the site became used for civil aviation from May 1919. A grandstand and racecourse was financed by the Ensbury Park (Bournemouth) Racecourse Company Ltd and built by Sir Robert McAlpine & Sons in late 1924-early 1925 on a significant portion of the airfield. Kinson
Kinson is a former village which has been absorbed by the town of Bournemouth in the county of Dorset in England. The area became part of Bournemouth on 1 April 1931. There were two electoral wards containing the name Kinson (North & South). Their joint population at the United Kingdom Census 2011, 2011 Census was 19,824. The village has a shopping centre and a pub, Gulliver's, known for much of the 19th and 20th centuries as 'The Dolphin', after the boat named Dolphin owned by Isaac Gulliver. Kinson nearly became part of Poole in 1931; however, a vigorous campaign by the residents saw the parish added to Bournemouth instead, necessitating an adjustment to the Hampshire/Dorset county boundary, which had separated the two areas. Slades Farm
Slades Farm is an area of Ensbury Park, Bournemouth, Dorset, England. History A renewed spate of housebuilding took place in the 1970s when Bournemouth Borough Council purchased Slade's Farm, south of Columbia Road, following an increased demand for low-cost housing in the borough. This was one of the last areas of agricultural land within the Bournemouth boundary. The farm dated back to about 1850 and was originally known as Talbot Farm, taking its name from Talbot Village, the model settlement further east; Slade was a later tenant. There had been some modernization of the farm over the years - in 1945 the trustees of the Talbot estate, who owned the freehold, applied for planning permission for a 'milk cooling shed' there - but by the 1960s the entire site had fallen out of use.
