Enrique García-Godoy
Enrique García–Godoy (1886–1947) was a Dominican painter and journalist. Godoy's work ranged from portraits, landscapes, and nudes to religious matters, costumbrist scenes, and historical themes.Danilo de los Santos. Memoria de la Pintura Dominicana. He was born in 1886 in La Vega, Dominican Republic. In 1924, he traveled to Italy, serving as Dominican consul, later returning to La Vega in 1930, where he establishes an art school and reaches national renown as an artist. His academy of Drawing and Painting went on to influence a generation of naturalist painters, which includes María Lora de Dalmasí, Bolívar Berrido and his nephew Darío Suro, among others. La Vega, Dominican Republic
La Vega, officially Concepción de la Vega (Real), is the third most populous city and a municipality of the Dominican Republic. It is the provincial capital of the homonymous province. The city is known as the Carnival epicenter of the Dominican Republic for its tradition and culture, its large agricultural production methods throughout its province. History Concepción de la Vega (Real) was the first settlement in its province, having been founded in 1495 by Batholomew Columbus at the foot of a fortress built by his brother, Christopher Columbus in 1494, which was intended to guard the route to the interior gold deposits of the Cibao Valley. This Spanish settlement gradually grew around the fort. La Vega Province
La Vega () is one of the 32 provinces of the Dominican Republic. It is located in the Cibao Valley, the north-central region of the country, and is divided into 4 municipalities with its capital city being the namesake of La Vega. The province borders Espaillat and Hermanas Mirabal to the north, Duarte to the east, Monseñor Nouel to the south and Santiago to the west. History The first settlement made by Christopher Columbus in the area was on December 8, 1494. Its initial economic development was based on gold mining.
