English Rose (epithet)
English rose is a description, associated with English culture, that may be applied to a naturally beautiful woman or girl who is from or is associated with England. It can also be used as a veiled insult - as a rose will bloom and fade so may a woman have great beauty in her youth but then quickly lose it. The description has a cultural reference to the national flower of England, the rose, and to its long tradition within English symbolism. Use in arts The term "English rose" is found in ''Merrie England'' (1902), a comic opera written by Basil Hood. He describes a garden where "women are the flowers" and in which "the sweetest blossom" or "fairest queen" is "the perfect English rose". The words are performed by a tenor in the role of Sir Walter Raleigh (1554–1618), in the presence of a May Queen, but regarding his secret love ''(purely within the opera)'', a member of the household of Elizabeth I. One song by the rock band the Jam taken from their album All Mod Con ...

English Rose (cultivars)
David Charles Henshaw Austin (16 February 1926 at Albrighton – 18 December 2018 in the same village) was a British rose breeder and writer who lived in Shropshire, England. His emphasis was on breeding roses with the character and fragrance of old garden roses (such as gallicas, damasks and alba roses) but with the repeat-flowering ability and wide colour range of modern roses such as hybrid teas and floribundas. Career Austin's first commercially available rose, Rosa 'Constance Spry', was introduced in 1961. In 1967 and 1968 he introduced 'Chianti' and 'Shropshire Lass' respectively. Although these first roses bloomed only once in spring or early summer, they led, in 1969, to a series of remontant (repeat-flowering) varieties, including 'Wife of Bath' and 'Canterbury' (both in honour of the English author Geoffrey Chaucer). Austin's roses soon became the most successful group of new roses in the twentieth century. Though Austin's roses are not officially recogni ...

Tudor Rose
The Tudor rose (sometimes called the Union rose) is the traditional floral heraldic badge, heraldic emblem of England and takes its name and origins from the House of Tudor, which united the House of Lancaster and the House of York. The Tudor rose consists of five white inner petals, representing the House of York, and five red outer petals to represent the House of Lancaster. Origins In the Battle of Bosworth Field (1485), Henry VII of England, Henry VII, of the House of Lancaster, took the crown of England from Richard III of England, Richard III, of the House of York. He thus brought to an end the retrospectively dubbed "Wars of the Roses". Kings of the House of Lancaster had sometimes used a red or gold rose as a badge; and the House of York had used a white rose as a badge. Henry's father was Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond, Edmund Tudor, and his mother was Lady Margaret Beaufort, Margaret Beaufort from the House of Lancaster; in January 1486 he married Elizabeth of ...

All Mod Cons
''All Mod Cons'' is the third studio album by the British band The Jam, released in 1978 by Polydor Records. The title, a British idiom one might find in housing advertisements, is short for "all modern conveniences" and is a pun on the band's association with the mod revival. The album reached No. 6 in the UK Albums Chart. The album was reissued in the United States in 1979, with the song "The Butterfly Collector" replacing "Billy Hunt". Background and music Following the release of their second album, ''This Is the Modern World'', the Jam undertook a 1978 tour of the US supporting American rock band Blue Öyster Cult. The Jam were not well received on the tour and ''This Is the Modern World'' failed to reach the ''Billboard'' 200 chart. Under pressure from their record company, Polydor, to deliver a hit record, songwriter Paul Weller was suffering from writer's block when the band returned to the UK. Weller admitted to a lack of interest during the writing/recording process ...
