	Engelhard Engelhard Corporation was an American Fortune 500, ''Fortune'' 500 company headquartered in Iselin, New Jersey, Iselin, New Jersey, United States. It is credited with developing the first production catalytic converter. In 2006, the German economy, German Chemical manufacturing, chemical manufacturer BASF bought Engelhard for US$5 billion. Early history The company was started by Charles W. Engelhard Sr. in 1902 when he purchased the Charles F. Croselmire Company in Newark, New Jersey. He subsequently founded the American Platinum Works in 1903 and acquired several other companies. In 1904, he purchased Baker & Co., a platinum smelting and refining business located in Newark and in 1905, he established Hanovia Chemical and Manufacturing Company also in Newark. 	Engelhard, North Carolina Engelhard is a census-designated place (CDP) and fishing community in Lake Landing Township on the mainland of Hyde County, North Carolina, United States. It has access to Pamlico Sound. As of the 2010 census it had a population of 445. History Inkwell and Wynne's Folly are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Geography Engelhard is in eastern Hyde County along U.S. Route 264, which leads northeast to Manteo and west to Belhaven. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of , all land. The community is at the head of Far Creek, a small tidal inlet of Pamlico Sound. Biography He was born at Vinger in Hedmark, Norway. He graduated in 1871 with a law degree. Engelhart was a public prosecutor by profession. He was a senior prosecutor at Kongsvinger from 1873.
