Encartaciones
Enkarterri ( Spanish: ''Las Encartaciones'') is a comarca of the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country, Spain. It is one of the seven ''eskualdeak/comarcas'' or districts that make up the province of Biscay. Its administrative centre is Balmaseda. Historically a larger region (merindad), Enkarterri stretched from the mountains that form its southern border with Cantabria and Castile-Leon in the west and south, to the river Nervion and the Estuary of Bilbao in the east – including the industrial municipalities of Gallarta, Muskiz, Ortuella, Portugalete, Santurtzi, Sestao, Trapagaran and Zierbena. Nowadays the name usually refers only to the rural western part of the historical territory, while the eastern urban area is known as the Left Bank (''Margen Izquierda'' / ''Ezkerraldea'') and is part of the Greater Bilbao comarca (together with Barakaldo, which used to belong to the neighbouring merindad of Uribe). Balmaseda
Balmaseda (in Basque and officially, in Spanish: ''Valmaseda'') is a town and municipality located in the province of Biscay, in the Basque Country. Balmaseda is the capital city of the comarca of Enkarterri, in western Biscay and serves an important role in the province thanks to its proximity to the capital city of Bilbao and the regions of Cantabria and Castile and León. Etymology Its toponomy probably comes from a union of the Spanish word ''val'' ( apocope of ''valle''), meaning "valley", and the Basque ''mahatseta'', which means "vineyard", ''Val-Mahatseta'' would then mean "valley of vineyards", which would eventually evolve into ''Valmaseda'', currently in use in Spanish, and ''Balmaseda'', following the orthographic rules of the Basque language. History The lands in which Balmaseda is located had been inhabited since centuries before its official foundation, with evidence of ancient pastoral activity. Comarcas Of The Basque Country
The autonomous community of the Basque Country within Spain contains several ''comarcas'' or ''eskualdeak'' in the Basque language, referring to local districts, grouped into its three long-established provinces. Biscay
Biscay (; eu, Bizkaia ; es, Vizcaya ) is a province of Spain and a historical territory of the Basque Country, heir of the ancient Lordship of Biscay, lying on the south shore of the eponymous bay. The capital and largest city is Bilbao. Biscay is one of the most renowned and prosperous provinces of Spain, historically a major trading hub in the Atlantic Ocean since medieval times and, later on, one of the largest industrial and financial centers of the Iberian peninsula. Since the extensive deindustrialization that took place throughout the 1970s, the economy has come to rely more on the services sector. Etymology It is accepted in linguistics (Koldo Mitxelena, etc.) that ''Bizkaia'' is a cognate of ''bizkar'' (cf. Biscarrosse in Aquitaine), with both place-name variants well attested in the whole Basque Country and out meaning 'low ridge' or 'prominence' (''Iheldo bizchaya'' attested in 1141 for the Monte Igueldo in San Sebastián). List Of Postal Codes In Spain
Spanish postal codes were introduced on 1 July 1984, when the introduced automated mail sorting. They consist of five numerical digits, where the first two digits, ranging 01 to 52, correspond either to one of the 50 provinces of Spain or to one of the two autonomous cities on the African coast. Two-digit prefixes The first two digits of a Spanish postal code identify the province or autonomous city it belongs to. The numbers were assigned to the 50 provinces of Spain ordered alphabetically at the time of implementation. The official names of some of the provinces have since changed, either to the regional language version of the name (e.g. from the Spanish to the Basque ) or to adopt the name of the autonomous community instead of the provincial capital (e.g. Santander to Cantabria). In these cases, the originally assigned code has been maintained, resulting in some exceptions to the alphabetical order. In addition, Ceuta and Melilla were originally included within the ... Telephone Numbers In Spain
The Spanish telephone numbering plan is the allocation of telephone numbers in Spain. It was previously regulated by the Comisión del Mercado de las Telecomunicaciones (CMT), but is now regulated by the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC). History Before 1998, local telephone calls could be made using only the subscriber's number without the area code, while the trunk code '9' was omitted when calling from outside Spain, e.g.: xx xx xx (within the same province) 9xx xxx xxx (within Spain) +34 xx xxx xxx (outside Spain) International calls were made by dialling the international access code 07, waiting for a tone, and then dialling the country code. Merindad
''Merindad'' () is a Mediaeval Spanish administrative term for a country subdivision smaller than a province but larger than a municipality. The officer in charge of a merindad was called a merino, roughly equivalent to the English ''count'' or ''bailiff''. It was used in the kingdoms of Castile and Navarre. Connected to the birth of Castile, the Merindades, standing for a northernmost ''comarca'' of the province of Burgos, was part of the creation of the administrative division by King Peter. Currently, the Foral Community of Navarre is still divided into five ''merindades'' standing for different judicial districts. The historic ''Merindad de Ultrapuertos'' lying to the north of the Pyrenees is nowadays Lower Navarre. Administratively, they have been substituted by the '' partido judicial''. In Biscay, the ''mancomunidades comarcales'' keep the place of the old ''merindades'', such as Duranguesado. See also * Partidos of Buenos Aires, a second-level administrative subdiv ... Comarca (Spain)
In Spain, a ''comarca'' (, sing.
