Emīlija Gudriniece
Emīlija Gudriniece (russian: Эмилия Юлиановна Гудриниеце; 3 August 1920 – 4 October 2004) was a Soviet and Latvian chemist who specialized in organic synthesis. She focused on the practical use of substances and synthesized Nitrofurazone, furacilin, for which she won a state prize. She was one of the first to recognize the potential of using vegetable oils as biofuels and initiated the study of rapeseed oil refining in Latvia. She was a prolific publisher, edited the ''Latvian Journal of Chemistry'', and published a Latvian language textbook on organic synthesis methods. She was awarded multiple prizes and recognition for her work. Biography Gudriniece was born on 3 August 1920, in the Rēzekne District of Latvia. Paul Walden
Paul Walden ( lv, Pauls Valdens; russian: Павел Иванович Вальден; german: Paul von Walden; 26 July 1863 – 22 January 1957) was a Russian, Latvian and German chemist known for his work in stereochemistry and history of chemistry. In particular he invented the stereochemical reaction known as Walden inversion and synthesized the first room-temperature ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate. Early life and education Walden was born in Rozulas in present-day Stalbe parish, Pārgauja municipality, Latvia in a large Latvian peasant family. At the age of four, he lost his father and later his mother. The Latvian Academy of Sciences ( lv, Latvijas Zinātņu akadēmija) is the official Academy of Sciences, science academy of Latvia and is an association of the country's foremost scientists. The academy was founded as the ''Latvian SSR Academy of Sciences'' ( lv, Latvijas PSR Zinātņu akadēmija). It is located in Riga. The current President of the academy is Ivars Kalviņš.
