Emil Biorn
Emil Christensen Biorn (June 7, 1864 – July 30, 1935) was a Norwegian-born American sculptor, painter, and composer. Background Emil Biorn was born in Christiania, Norway, the son of Christian Biørn from Lier and his wife Karoline Agnete, née Høyerdahl (or Heyerdahl), from Aurskog. He was trained at both the Royal Norwegian School of Drawing and at Lindeman's School of Music in Oslo. Biorn studied art in Paris and as well as at the Chicago Art Institute. Career In 1887, Biorn came to America, where he was employed as a commercial artist by the Barnes-Crosby Company, an engraving firm in Chicago. He married Sigrid Lowsum (1870–1939) in 1891. From 1906 to 1914, Biorn was principal conductor of the Norwegian Singers' Society of America. In 1914, he conducted that chorus during their trip to Norway to help celebrate the centennial of the Constitution of Norway. Oslo
Oslo ( , , or ; sma, Oslove) is the capital and most populous city of Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. Decorah, Iowa
Decorah is a city in and the county seat of Winneshiek County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,587 at the time of the 2020 census. Decorah is located at the intersection of State Highway 9 and U.S. Route 52, and is the largest community in Winneshiek County. History Decorah was the site of a Ho-Chunk village beginning ''circa'' 1840. Several Ho-Chunks had settled along the Upper Iowa River that year when the U.S. Army forced them to remove from Wisconsin. In 1848, the United States removed the Ho-Chunks again to a new reservation in Minnesota, opening their Iowa villages to white settlers. The first European-Americans to settle were the Day family from Tazewell County, Virginia. According to local Congregationalist minister Rev. Chicago Norske Klub (1911 to 1971) was a Chicago, Illinois based Norwegian-American cultural and social organization. Background Chicago Norske Klub was founded in 1911 through the merger of two prior organizations which had dated to 1890, the Norwegian Club in Chicago (''Den Norske Klub i Chicago'') and the Norwegian Quartet Club (''Den Norske Kvartet Klub''). Its membership consisted largely of businessmen and professionals including a number of graduates of Norwegian technical schools. Programs were aimed at sociability and fellowship. The Chicago Norske Klub established premises near Logan Square on Kedzie Avenue through financing arranged by the State Bank of Chicago and through the initiative of Birger Osland, a Chicago investment banker.
