The Embassy of the United Kingdom in Oslo is the chief diplomatic mission of the United Kingdom in Norway. The Embassy is located on one of the most expensive streets in Norway, Thomas Heftyes gate, in the Frogner district. The current British Ambassador to Norway is Richard Wood. Ambassador's residence The British Ambassador's residence in Oslo, Villa Frognæs, is located at Drammensveien 79. Built in 1859, it was designed by Norwegian architects Heinrich Ernst Schirmer and Christian Heinrich Grosch and purchased by the British government in 1906. Oslo
Oslo ( , , or ; sma, Oslove) is the capital and most populous city of Norway. It constitutes both a county and a municipality. The municipality of Oslo had a population of in 2022, while the city's greater urban area had a population of in 2019, and the metropolitan area had an estimated population of in 2021. During the Viking Age the area was part of Viken. Oslo was founded as a city at the end of the Viking Age in 1040 under the name Ánslo, and established as a ''kaupstad'' or trading place in 1048 by Harald Hardrada. Richard Wood (diplomat)
Richard Wood is a British diplomat, who served as the British Ambassador to Norway from 2018 to 2023. Early life Richard John Wood was born on 27 August 1967 in Great Yarmouth in Norfolk, England. Wood is the son of John Michael Wood and Christine Barbara Wood. Wood was educated at Lynn Grove High School and East Norfolk Sixth Form College. Wood attended Leeds Polytechnic, graduating with a BA (Hons) in European languages and institutions in 1990. Career Wood joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 1990. His first role was as Desk Officer for the Single Market, European Presidency, and Gibraltar. His first foreign posting was as the Second Secretary for internal politics in Cape Town and Pretoria. During his first posting Wood was outed as homosexual to the FCO Security Department by colleagues, and was sent back to Britain and told to expect dismissal. Frogner
Frogner is a residential and retail borough in the West End of Oslo, Norway, with a population of 59,269 as of 2020. In addition to the original Frogner, the borough incorporates Bygdøy, Uranienborg and Majorstuen. The borough is named after Frogner Manor, and includes Frogner Park. The borough has the highest real estate prices in Norway. Etymology The borough is named after the old Frogner Manor. The Norse form of the name was ''Fraunar'' (plural form), and is likely derived from the word ''frauð'' 'manure' — meaning 'fertilized fields'. (See also Frogn and Tøyen.) Heinrich Ernst Schirmer
Heinrich Ernst Schirmer (27 August 1814 – 6 December 1887) was a German-born architect most noted for his work in Norway. Schirmer worked in Norway from 1838 to 1883 and left his mark on a number of public buildings. He contributed significantly to the introduction of the so-called Swiss architectural style in Norway, based partly on Italian villa style, Gothic Revival, and neoclassicism. Biography Schirmer was born in Leipzig, Germany. He was the son of Johan Gottlieb Schirmer and Johanne Sophie Kühne. He was the father of architect Adolf Schirmer. He received his architectural education at art academies in Dresden from 1831 to 1834, and in Munich from 1834 to 1837. In Munich he was influenced by German neoclassicist architect Leo von Klenze and his nation-building and urban design ideas. Christian Heinrich Grosch
Christian Heinrich Grosch (21 January 1801 – 4 May 1865) was a Norwegian architect. He was a dominant figure in Norwegian architecture in the first half of the 1800s. Biography Christian Heinrich Grosch was born in Copenhagen, Denmark. His family moved to Frederikshald (now Halden) in Østfold, Norway during 1811. He was first educated by his father, Heinrich August Grosch (1763-1843) who was a painter, graphic designer and teacher. When The Royal Drawing School was established in Christiania (now Oslo) in 1818, his father gained employment there as an instructor and re-located the family. Christian Heinrich attended the Royal Drawing School from 1819 to 1820. He also studied engineering with instructors including Benoni Aubert and Theodor Broch. In 1824, he completed his training at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
