Elman Ali Ahmed
Elman Ali Ahmed ( so, Cilmi Cali Axmed, ar, علم علي أحمد) was a Somali entrepreneur and social activist. Personal life Ahmed was based in Mogadishu Ahmed was married to Fartuun Adan, with whom he had four daughters. Due to having receiving death threats, Ahmed had planned to move abroad. On 9 March 1996, he was assassinated near the family's home in the southern part of the city. The area was at the time under the control of faction leader Mohamed Farah Aidid. Although Ahmed's killing was alleged to have been politically related, a representative of Aidid denied involvement and instead condemned the murder. In November, 2019, Elman's daughter, Almaas Elman, who had grown up in Canada, and who, with other family members, had returned to Somalia, as aid-workers, as adults, was killed near Mogadishu airport. Fartuun Adan
Fartuun Abdisalaan Adan ( so, Fartuun Aadan, ar, فارتون آدن) is a Somali social activist. She is the Executive Director of the Elman Peace and Human Rights Centre. Personal life Adan grew up in Somalia. She was married to Elman Ali Ahmed, a local entrepreneur and peace activist. The couple had four daughters. In 1996, during the height of the civil war, Adan's husband was killed near the family's home in southern Mogadishu. Adan subsequently emigrated to Canada in 1999. In 2007, she returned to Somalia to advocate for peace and human rights. On November 20, 2019, local authorities confirmed her daughter Almaas Elman, who had also returned to Somalia as an aid worker, had been shot and killed in a car, near the Mogadishu airport. Almaas Elman
Almaas Elman (died 20 November 2019) was a Somali-Canadian humanitarian aid worker, the eldest daughter of a prominent family of humanitarian aid-workers. Her parents were Elman Ali Ahmed and Fartuun Adan. She, her mother and her sisters emigrated to Canada in the early 1990s. Her father was gunned down in 1996. Her mother helped found the Elman Peace Center. One of her sisters Ilwad Elman was a short-listed candidate for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize. Her husband, a Somali-Swedish tech entrepreneur, was Zakaria Hersi. They married in 2017. Elman had served in the Canadian Armed Forces Reserve prior to her return to Somalia. Elman had served as First Secretary, in the Somali embassy, in Kenya. Upon her return to Somalia Elman served as a liaison with diplomats from the European Union. Ilwad Elman
Ilwad Elman ( so, Ilwaad Elman) is a Somali-Canadian social activist. She works at the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center in Mogadishu alongside her mother Fartuun Adan, the NGO's founder. She was voted the African Young Personality (Female) of the Year during the 2016 Africa Youth Awards. Personal life Ilwad was born between 1989 and 1990 in Mogadishu, Somalia. One of four daughters, she is the child of the late entrepreneur and peace activist Elman Ali Ahmed and social activist Fartuun Adan. Her father was an ardent peace activist in the 1990s, who coined the famous mantra in Somalia "Drop the Gun, Pick up the Pen"; he was assassinated in 1996 for his human rights work and is known to this day as the Somali Father of Peace. Iman Elman
Iman Elman (born 1992) is a Somali-Canadian military officer. When she was a child, Elman's parents were peace advocates in wartorn Somalia. When the dangers of working in Somalia increased her parents agreed that her father, Elman Ali Ahmed would stay in Somalia, and continue to work for Peace, while her mother, Fartuun Adan would raise their daughters in Canada. When her daughters reached adult-hood Fartuun returned to Somalia, to renew her work for Peace. Iman's elder sisters, Almaas Elman and Ilwad Elman, also returned to Somalia, followed by Iman herself. Almaas became a Somali diplomat, while Ilwad joined her mother at the Elman Peace and Human Rights Center. Mohamed Farah Aidid
Mohamed Farrah Hassan Aidid ( so, Maxamed Faarax Xasan Caydiid; ar, محمد فرح حسن عيديد; 15 December 1934 – 1 August 1996) was a Somali general and diplomat. Educated in both Rome and Moscow, he served as a chief in the Italian colonial police force and later as a brigadier general in the Somali National Army. He would eventually became chairman of the United Somali Congress (USC), and soon after the Somali National Alliance (SNA). Along with other armed opposition groups, he succeeded in toppling President Siad Barre's 22 year old regime following the outbreak of the Somali Civil War in 1991.
