Ellen Cogen Lipton
Ellen Cogen Lipton (born March 26, 1967) is an American politician and patent attorney from Huntington Woods, Michigan. She currently serves on the Michigan State Board of Education. She formerly served as a member of the Michigan State House of Representatives. A Democrat, she represented the 27th State House District, which is located north of Detroit in south-east Oakland County. She was first elected in 2008, and subsequently re-elected in 2010 and 2012. She ran to represent the 11th District in the state Senate in 2014. Incumbent Vincent Gregory defeated Vicki Barnett and Ellen Lipton in the Democratic primary. In 2018, she joined the Democratic field to replace retiring Rep. Sander Levin in the 9th District of Michigan. She was defeated in the primary by Andy Levin, the retiring incumbent's son winning 42.4% to Levin's 52.4. Sander Levin
Sander Martin Levin (born September 6, 1931) is an American politician who served in the United States House of Representatives from 1983 to 2019, representing (numbered as the from 1983 to 1993 and as the from 1993 to 2013). Levin, a member of the Democratic Party from Michigan, is a former ranking member on the House Ways and Means Committee; he was Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee from 2010 to 2011. He is the older brother of former U.S. Senator Carl Levin, and the father of current Congressman Andy Levin, his successor. Equality Michigan is an American civil rights, advocacy and anti-violence organization serving Michigan's lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. Clean Water Action is an American environmental advocacy group. Created in 1972, the group focuses on canvassing and gaining support for political issues and candidates. EMILY's List is an American political action committee (PAC) that aims to help elect Democratic female candidates in favor of abortion rights to office. It was founded by Ellen Malcolm in 1985. The group's name is an acronym for "Early Money Is Like Yeast". Malcolm commented that "it makes the dough rise". Berkley is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is a northern suburb of Detroit located along the Woodward Corridor ( M-1) in southeastern Oakland County. The population was 15,194 as of the 2020 Census. History Prior to settlement, the land which would become Berkley consisted largely of dense forests and some isolated pockets of swampland.
