The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". The 1983 Northwest Territories general election was held on November 21, 1983. This was the first election in the Northwest Territories with live television coverage of vote returns. Election Results The election was held in 24 constituencies, up two from the previous general election in 1979, with 15,764 ballot cast, a turnout of 69.72%. Outgoing Premier George Braden did not run for re-election. Between Two Worlds (1990 Film)
Joseph Idlout (1912/1913 - 2 June 1968) is an Inuk featured on the former Canadian two-dollar bill. When the High Arctic relocation occurred in 1959, Idlout helped Inuit families adjust to their new surroundings in Resolute, Northwest Territories (now Nunavut). In 1954, due to the lack of foxes in the Pond Inlet area, Idlout requested that he move to Resolute. The government was not supportive of the move but finally relented and Idlout moved in 1955. Documentaries Idlout came to public attention after the release of the 1952 documentary ''Land of the Long Day''. At the time Idlout was living in Pond Inlet and was known for his ability as a hunter and leader at the camps. The publicity of the film has led to him being called the "most famous Inuit" of his time. Mark Evaloarjuk, CM (né Evaluarjuk; 1937 – July 3, 2002) was a northern Canadian business pioneer and politician from Igloolik, Nunavut. He served as a member of the Northwest Territories Legislature from 1975 until 1983, and served as President of Arctic Cooperatives Ltd. In 1981, he became inducted as member of the Order of Canada. Evaluarjuk was first elected to the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1975 Northwest Territories general election winning the new electoral district of Foxe Basin. He was re-elected to a second term in the 1979 Northwest Territories general election. On June 22, 1981, he was appointed to be a Member of the Order of Canada for his past work in bringing the cooperative movement to the Canadian arctic and helping to establish the largest employer of Aboriginal Canadians. Foxe Basin (electoral District)
Foxe Basin is a shallow oceanic basin north of Hudson Bay, in Nunavut, Canada, located between Baffin Island and the Melville Peninsula. For most of the year, it is blocked by sea ice (fast ice) and drift ice made up of multiple ice floes. The nutrient-rich cold waters found in the basin are known to be especially favourable to phytoplankton and the numerous islands within it are important bird habitats, including Sabine's gulls and many types of shorebirds. Bowhead whales migrate to the northern part of the basin each summer. The basin takes its name from the English explorer Luke Foxe who entered the lower part in 1631. Waterway Foxe Basin is a broad, predominantly shallow depression, generally less than in depth, while to the south, depths of up to occur.
