Elicio Argüelles Pozo
Elicio Argüelles y Pozo was a Cuban Senator and President of the Senate. During the Spanish Civil War, he was the president of the Comité Nacionalista Español (CNE), a Cuban organization dedicated to the Carlist and Falangist ideologies of the Nationalist faction.'''' At the conclusion of the war, he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic by Francisco Franco for his services to Spain. The historian Allan Chase writes that Argüelles was a blue-blood landowner who was in charge of the CNE cell "A-1," alongside his friend José Ignacio Rivero Alonso, who headed the cell "R-1." Elicio Argüelles Menocal
Elicio Argüelles y García–Menocal (Elicio Argüelles II or Elicio Argüelles Jr.) was a Cuban exile and politician—one of the last of the Cuban senators elected to office before the Communist Revolution. His father was Elicio Argüelles Pozo. He, and his father met Ernest Hemingway at a Jai alai game in Havana, and they became family friends. Argüelles' father owned the Frontón Jai Alai, the largest Jai Alai arena in Hanava. In Cuba during World War II, Argüelles was instrumental in the FBI effort to hunt Nazis in Latin America, and was involved in some way with Hemingway's anti-submarine missions. In the late 1950s, he had become one of Hemingway's five closest friends, alongside his cousin, Mario Menocal. His daughter is Rosario Kennedy. Elicio Berriz
Elicio Berriz (c. 1820 – c. 1890) was a Spanish soldier and Mayor of Ponce, Puerto Rico, from 1 January 1869 to 11 May 1870. and again from 1 January 1872 until his mayoral assignment was passed to two Ponce municipal assemblymen, Francisco Arce y Romero and Alejandro Albizu, later that year. As a Spanish Army soldier, Berriz held the rank of Artillery Colonel. First mayoral term (1869) Berriz served as mayor from 1 January 1869 until 11 May 1870, when Vicente Pérez Valdivieso started serving as mayor. Berriz is best remembered as the military officer and mayor who, in 1869, sought the removal and destruction of the monument erected to honor the Spanish Constitution of 1812 that for many decades had been located at today's Plaza Degetau.
