Kurri Kurri was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales created in 1927, with the abolition of the multi-member electorates of Newcastle and Maitland and named after the Hunter Region town of Kurri Kurri. It was abolished in 1968 and replaced by Wallsend. Kurri Kurri was a safe seat and was only held by a Labor candidate. Of the 15 elections, the Labor was unopposed at 6 elections, and a candidate contested 7 elections with a highest vote of 14.8% at the 1935 election. The closest contest was the 1956 election, the only occasion in which a conservative party fielded a candidate, when candidate Stanley Mettam achieved 15.6% of the vote. Prior to 1927 some districts returned multiple members, including 1920-1927 when all districts returned 3,4 or 5 members. The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. Electoral District Of Newcastle
Newcastle is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales named after and including Newcastle. It is represented since the 2014 Newcastle by-election by Tim Crakanthorp of the Australian Labor Party. The district takes in the eastern part of the City of Newcastle, including the parts of the suburbs from Hexham to Mayfield lying to the east of the Main North railway line, Broadmeadow, Hamilton South, Merewether Heights and Merewether and the suburbs further east, including central Newcastle and Hamilton. The Hunter Region, also commonly known as the Hunter Valley, is a region of New South Wales, Australia, extending from approximately to north of Sydney. It contains the Hunter River and its tributaries with highland areas to the north and south. George Booth (politician)
George Booth (19 March 1891 – 31 July 1960) was an Australian politician, elected as a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. Booth was born in Bolton, England. He worked part-time as a coal miner at eleven and attended classes by Philip Snowden and became interested in the Labour Movement. In 1910, he migrated to Australia and worked on railway construction in the Blue Mountains. From 1912, he worked as a coal miner at Stanford Merthyr and Pelaw Main. In 1913, he married Annie Elizabeth Bell and had one son and one daughter. Booth was elected for the Labor Party as a member for Newcastle in 1925, during the period of proportional representation, and Kurri Kurri from 1927 to 1960. He was the Chairman of Committees (effectively deputy Speaker) from 1941 till 1959. His son, Ken Booth succeeded him as member for Kurri Kurri. Booth died at Wallsend, New South Wales. Kenneth George Booth (23 February 1926 – 1 November 1988) was a New South Wales politician, Treasurer, and Minister of the Crown in the cabinets of Neville Wran and Barrie Unsworth. From 1981 to 1988 he was the Treasurer of New South Wales.
