Electoral District Of Kennedy
Kennedy was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. History In 1864, the ''Additional Members Act'' created six additional electoral districts, each returning 1 member: * Clermont * Kennedy * Maryborough * Mitchell * Rockhampton * Warrego The first elections in these six electorates were held in 1865 (that is, during a parliamentary term and not as part of a general election across Queensland). The nomination date for the election in Kennedy was 18 February 1865 and the election was held on 18 March 1865. When first constituted, Kennedy covered an area from Cardwell to Mackay, west to the Great Dividing Range, taking in the entire Burdekin River system. The district covered the north Queensland coast from Mackay to Hinchinbrook Island. It was named for the explorer Edmund Kennedy. Edmund Kennedy
Edmund Besley Court Kennedy J. P. (5 September 1818 – December 1848) was an explorer in Australia in the mid nineteenth century. He was the Assistant-Surveyor of New South Wales, working with Sir Thomas Mitchell. Kennedy explored the interior of Queensland and northern New South Wales, including the Thomson River, the Barcoo River, Cooper Creek, and Cape York Peninsula. He died in December 1848 after being speared by Aboriginal Australians in far north Queensland near Cape York. Early life Kennedy was born on 5 September 1818 on Guernsey in the Channel Islands to Colonel Thomas Kennedy (British Army) and Mary Ann (Smith) Kennedy. He was the sixth born of nine children, comprising five boys and four girls. Kennedy was educated at Elizabeth College Guernsey, and expressed an early interest in surveying. Electoral District Of Haughton
The electoral district of Haughton was a Legislative Assembly electorate in the state of Queensland, Australia. It was first created in a redistribution ahead of the 1950 state election, and existed until the 1960 state election. Haughton was located south of Townsville and incorporated much of the former districts of Mundingburra and Kennedy. Haughton was abolished in 1960, replaced by Burdekin. The Australian Labor Party (Queensland Branch), commonly known as Queensland Labor or as just Labor inside Queensland, is the state branch of the Australian Labor Party in the state of Queensland. Sir Arthur Rutledge (29 August 1843 – 8 February 1917) was a lawyer and politician in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Arthur Rutledge was the son of James and Lucy Ann (''née'' Field). He was born at Castlereagh near Penrith, New South Wales. Henry Wyndham Palmer (1826 – 10 May 1887) was a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Biography Palmer was born in Armagh, Ireland, the son of Arthur Palmer and his wife Emily (née Hunter). His brother, Arthur Hunter Palmer went on to be Premier of Queensland. When he came to Australia he worked the gold mines of Charters Towers and also pastoral pursuits in both Queensland and New South Wales. He was a part owner of the ''Charters Towers Daily Herald''. John Murtagh Macrossan
John Murtagh Macrossan (1832 – 30 March 1891) was an Australian politician of the late 19th century in the parliament of Queensland. Early and parliamentary life Macrossan was born in Donegal, Ireland. He moved to the colony of Victoria at the age of 21 to work on the gold diggings. Twelve years later he moved to North Queensland where he became well known among the miners in 1873 was elected a member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly for the Kennedy electoral district. He championed the causes of regulation of the mining industry and Separatism of North Queensland as a separate colony. From January 1879 he was member for Townsville and secretary for public works and for mines in the first and second McIlwraith Ministries.
