The Electoral district of Elsternwick was an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly situated in the Melbourne south-east suburb of Elsternwick, Victoria. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. John Don
John Don (10 September 1918 – 1 April 2013) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ballarat to solicitor Joseph Edwin Don and Mary Minnie Cross. He attended various state schools before studying at Melbourne University. During World War II he served in the Middle East and later the Philippines, attaining the rank of major and being awarded the MBE. On 9 March 1943, he married Joan Yvonne Davies, with whom he had three daughters. In 1945, Don was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal member for Elsternwick, while he was still studying law (he would be admitted as a solicitor in 1954). He was briefly a minister without portfolio in June 1950. Electoral Reform League
The Victorian Liberal Party (VLP), often called the Hollway Liberals, was an independent political party formed on 27 October 1954 from a grouping of supporters of Thomas Hollway, a former leader of the Liberal and Country Party and Premier of Victoria. The extant Liberal and Country Party was the actual Victorian division of the Liberal Party. The party was formed from the Electoral Reform League, a political group formed by Hollway after his expulsion from the Liberal and Country Party, with the goal of re-distributing Victoria's electoral boundaries, which Hollway and his supporters saw as mal-apportioned in favour of the Country Party. With electoral reform implemented by John Cain's Labor government, the group became known as the "Hollway group". Richard Gainey
Richard John Gainey (4 September 1890 – 15 July 1975) was an Australian politician. He was born in Eaglehawk to farmer John Gainey and May Salter. He attended Melbourne Continuation School and became a schoolteacher at Glenhope until 1916, when he enlisted in the AIF. He was a gunner in France and Belgium, and was wounded and gassed in 1918. He returned to teaching in 1919, and on 18 September 1927 married Evelyn Alice Aitken, with whom he had a daughter. He was the head teacher at Abbotsford State School, and was the president of the Returned Soldier Teachers of Victoria and also significant in the Returned and Services League. He had been a founding member of the Gould League in 1907 and was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for his charity work.
