Election (2005 Film)
''Election'' (; literal title: ''Black Society'', a common Cantonese reference to the triads), is a 2005 Hong Kong crime film directed by Johnnie To. Featuring a large ensemble cast, the film stars Simon Yam and Tony Leung Ka-fai as two gang leaders engaged in a power struggle to become the new leader of a Hong Kong triad. The film premiered as an "Official Selection" at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival, before being released in Hong Kong on 20 October 2005, with a Category III rating. A sequel, ''Election 2'' (also known as ''Triad Election'' in the United States), was released in 2006. Johnnie To
Johnnie To Kei-fung (born 22 April 1955) is a Hong Kong film director, screenwriter and film producer. Popular in his native Hong Kong, To has also found acclaim overseas. Intensely prolific, To has made films in a variety of genres, though in the West he is best known for his action and crime movies, which have earned him critical respect and a cult following (which include Quentin Tarantino, who once said that he really loves to watch To's gangster films). 2005 Cannes Film Festival
The 58th Cannes Film Festival started on 11 May and ran until 22 May 2005. Twenty movies from 13 countries were selected to compete. The awards were announced on 21 May. The Palme d'Or went to the Belgium, Belgian film ''L'Enfant (film), L'Enfant'' by Dardenne brothers. Wong Tin-lam
Wong Tin-Lam (1927–2010) was a Chinese screenwriter, producer, director, and actor, who has contributed to the Hong Kong cinema scene with a career spanning six decades. He has made films in Cantonese, Mandarin and Amoy dialect. Career Wong began as a film director in the mid-1950s, working for the Hsin Hwa Motion Picture Company (renamed to Xinhua Film Company in 1957). Wong later joined Cathay Organisation. When Cathay Studios was shut down in the early 1970s, Wong continued to establish himself as a filmmaker, making TV drama serials by combining film production techniques with the flexibility of television production, and became a trendsetter in melodrama and wuxia serials. Gordon Lam
Gordon Lam Ka-tung (林家棟; born 21 September 1967) is a Hong Kong actor, film producer and screenwriter. Initially known for his supporting roles in films directed by Andrew Lau and Johnnie To, Lam eventually became a lead actor in the Hong Kong film industry, appearing in the 2013 box office hit, ''Firestorm'', and the Hong Kong Film Award-winning 2016 film, ''Trivisa'', which also netted him the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actor. Lam Suet (; born 1964), or Lin Xue, is a Hong Kong film actor. Life and career Lam was born in Tianjin, and came to Hong Kong as a youth in 1979 to receive inheritance money left by his grandfather. Soon after, all the money had been squandered and Lam had to work various odd jobs to make a living. In the mid-eighties he got employment on movie sets through the help of friends.
