Eleanor Best
Eleanor Best (1875-1957) was a British oil painter known for her portrait and figure paintings. Biography Best was born in Amport in Hampshire and studied at the Slade School of Art in London during 1909. She continued to live in London throughout her life, settling in Richmond. Best exhibited at the Royal Academy several times, with the New English Art Club and also at the Royal Society of Arts and the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers. She also exhibited in the United States and Sweden. The Contemporary Art Society hold examples of her work and she was included in the 1986 ''Slade Ladies'' exhibition held by the Parkin Gallery. From 1928 to 1930 Best exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. Amport
Amport is a village and civil parish in the Test Valley district of Hampshire, England, a few miles west of Andover. It incorporates the small hamlet of East Cholderton and has a population of about 1,200. There is a village green is surrounded by thatched cottages. The village lies in the valley of the Pillhill Brook, a tributary of the River Anton and thence the River Test, a chalk stream famous for its trout-fishing, and for those who enjoy a country walk, there are many attractive routes. Contemporary Art Society
The Contemporary Art Society (CAS) is an independent charity that champions the collecting of outstanding contemporary art and craft for UK museum collections. Since its founding in 1910 the organisation has donated over 10,000 works to museums across the UK. From the 1930s the Society also donated works to Commonwealth museums, but since 1989 the focus has remained exclusively on UK institutions.
