Eldred is a village in Greene County, Illinois, United States. The population was 201 at the 2010 census. History Eldred was founded because of its situation in the Illinois River Bottoms as a town that combined the values of a river and a bluff-side village. Eldred first appeared on river plat books as "Farrow Town" in the 1830s, but was founded sometime before the admittance of Illinois as a state in 1818. A few of its original founders, were of Scotch-Irish ancestry from the Upland South. Geography Eldred is located in southwestern Greene County at (39.286663, -90.553458). Eldred Glacier is a glacier long, flowing to the north coast of King George Island immediately east of Potts Peak, in the South Shetland Islands. It was named by the UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee in 1960 for Andrew J. Eldred, Master of the sealing vessel ''Thomas Hunt'' from Stonington, Connecticut, who visited the South Shetland Islands in 1873–74, 1875–76, 1878–79 and 1879–80. During the latter season he took part in the unsuccessful search for the ''Charles Shearer''. Eldred Rock Light
The Eldred Rock Light is an historic octagonal lighthouse adjacent to Lynn Canal in Alaska. It is the last of the ten lighthouses constructed in Alaska between 1902 and 1906. It was also the last of 12 manned lighthouses that were started in Alaska. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Eldred Rock Lighthouse. History The Lighthouse Board approved plans for a lighthouse on Eldred Rock in 1905 and hoped that the design would be completed before November and the coming of harsh winter weather. However, due to weather, the lighthouse was not finished until June 1, 1906. A fourth-order Fresnel lens was placed in the lantern room, near the top of the fifty-six foot lighthouse, at a focal plane of ninety-one feet. Eldred Point () is an ice-covered point which marks the west side of the terminus of Land Glacier on the coast of Marie Byrd Land. Eldred Rock
Eldred Rock (also known as Nechraje) is an island in the boroughs of Juneau and Haines, Alaska, United States. Located in Lynn Canal, it is southeast of Kataguni Island and northwest of the city of Juneau. This island is the site of the Eldred Rock Light, a lighthouse built in 1905 and staffed until the United States Coast Guard automated its operation in 1973. The Eldred Rock Coast Guard Heliport is also located on the island. Wrecks and incidents Eldred Rock has been the location of multiple maritime incidents. One of the earliest involved the '' Hassler'', the Coast Guard's first iron-hulled steamship.
