Joseph Barton Elam
Joseph Barton Elam, Sr. (June 12, 1821 – July 4, 1885), was a two-term Democratic U.S. representative for Louisiana's 4th congressional district, whose service corresponded with the administration of U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes. Early life and education Elam was born near Hope in Hempstead County in southwestern Arkansas Territory, to William Jefferson Elam, a teacher, and his wife, the former Cynthia Wheaton, both from Virginia. The Elam family moved in 1823 to Ayish Bayou near San Augustine in East Texas, where another son, Charles Wheaton Elam, was born. In 1826, the Elams relocated to Natchitoches, Louisiana, where Mary Jane Elam, was born. By 1833, the family moved to Fort Jessup, Louisiana, the westernmost outpost of the United States at that time. William Elam tutored the officers' sons. Louisiana's 4th congressional district is a congressional district in the U.S. state of Louisiana. The district is located in the northwestern part of the state and is based in Shreveport-Bossier City. It also includes the cities of Minden, DeRidder, and Natchitoches. The district is represented by Republican Mike Johnson. History The 4th congressional district was created in 1843, the first new district in the state in 20 years. It was gained after the 1840 U.S. Census. For most of the next 150 years, the 4th was centered on Shreveport and northwestern Louisiana. William Scott "Jack" Elam (November 13, 1920 – October 20, 2003) was an American film and television actor best known for his numerous roles as villains in Western films and, later in his career, comedies (sometimes spoofing his villainous image). James Elam (physician)
James Otis Elam (May 31, 1918 – July 10, 1995) was an American physician and respiratory researcher. Elam was born in Austin, Texas. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas at Austin in 1942. He then studied at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. After doing an internship at Bethesdal Naval Hospital in 1945-1946 Elam went to the University of Minnesota for advanced studies. Based on his research at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center in Buffalo, New York for understanding carbon dioxide absorption, he developed a prototype ventilator device that efficiently could absorb carbon dioxide during surgery, dubbed the Roswell Park ventilator. This was further developed into the ''Air-Shields Ventimeter'' ventilator that were used for a period of almost 50 years. Jason Elam (born March 8, 1970) is a former American football placekicker. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the third round of the 1993 NFL Draft and played 15 seasons with the Broncos and two with the Atlanta Falcons. Lee Patrick George Elam (born 24 September 1976) is an English former professional footballer. Career Elam was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire and began his footballing career in 1998 with Conference National side Southport. During his four years with the team, he played in 104 first team games in which he scored 15 goals. Norah Elam, also known as Norah Dacre Fox (née Norah Doherty, 1878–1961), was a militant suffragette, anti-vivisectionist, feminist and fascist in the United Kingdom. Born at 13 Waltham Terrace in Dublin to John Doherty, a partner in a paper mills, and Charlotte Isabel Clarke, she moved to England with her family and by 1891 was living in London. Norah married Charles Richard Dacre Fox in 1909. Political activity Norah was a prominent member of the Women's Social and Political Union and served as general secretary.
