Provinces Of Cuba
Administratively, Cuba is divided into 15 provinces and one special municipality (the Isla de la Juventud). The last modification was approved in August 2010 (by the Cuban National Assembly), splitting Havana province into two new provinces: Artemisa (which incorporates the three eastern municipalities of the neighbour Pinar del Río) and Mayabeque. Artemisa Province
Artemisa Province is one of the two new provinces created from the former La Habana Province, whose creation was approved by the Cuban National Assembly on August 1, 2010, the other being Mayabeque Province. The new provinces came into existence on January 1, 2011. Overview Artemisa was the largest city and municipality of the former La Habana Province. The newly formed province combined the eight western municipalities of La Habana Province and three eastern municipalities of neighbor province Pinar del Río (Bahía Honda, Candelaria and San Cristóbal). The capital and largest city is Artemisa (47,000 pop. in 2015). The new province is only larger than Havana city and Mayabeque, but with more population than four other Cuban provinces. Consejo Popular (Cuba)
es, consejo popular, lit=Popular Council, People's Council (sometimes shorten to CP) commonly stated as a ward is an electoral ward or "political-administrative demarcations" of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba. They were created in 1988 and there are a total of 474 wards as of 2023. They also work as subdivisions, under municipalities. Most rural wards include 1 major town or village (usually with a population of 700-3000) with a few hamlets, while urban areas (usually municipal seat) are usually split into a few wards, named the city name with a I, II and sometimes III, and IV (an example is Camajuaní II). Sometimes when there’s only two wards in the city they are split into “Norte” or north and “Sur” or south (an example is Encrucijada Norte). Alquízar
Alquízar () is a town and municipality in the Artemisa Province of Cuba. History The settlement was first mentioned in 1616, as a coffee plantation owned by ''Don Sancho de Alquízar'', who gives the name of the community. In 1826, a garrison was established here, and it was incorporated in 1879. Geography The town is located in the south-east corner of the province, south-west of San Antonio de los Baños and west of Güira de Melena. The municipality is divided into the barrios of Guanímar, La Paz, Pueblo (capital), San Andrés and Tumbadero. The municipality is divided into consejos populares (i.e. "popular councils"): Mayorquín - Sur (main town is El Mayorquín), Norte, Dagame, and Pulido - Guanímar.
