El Manzano (prison)
El Manzano is a prison in the city of Concepción, Chile. After the 2010 Chile earthquake, a prison riot began following a failed escape attempt by inmates. Different parts of the prison were set on fire and the riot was only controlled after the guards chot into the air and received help from military units. Concepción (; originally: ''Concepción de la Madre Santísima de la Luz'', "Conception of the Blessed Mother of Light") is a city and commune in central Chile, and the geographical and demographic core of the Greater Concepción metropolitan area, one of the three major conurbations in the country. 2010 Chile Earthquake
The 2010 Chile earthquake and tsunami ( es, Terremoto del 27F) occurred off the coast of central Chile on Saturday, 27 February at 03:34 local time (06:34 UTC), having a magnitude of 8.8 on the moment magnitude scale, with intense shaking lasting for about three minutes. It was felt strongly in six Chilean regions (from Valparaíso in the north to Araucanía in the south) that together make up about 80 percent of the country's population. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) the cities experiencing the strongest shaking—VIII (''Severe'') on the Mercalli intensity scale (MM)—were Concepción, Arauco, and Coronel. A prison riot is an act of concerted defiance or disorder by a group of prisoners against the prison administrators, prison officers, or other groups of prisoners. Prison riots have not been the subject of many academic studies or research inquiries. The analyses that do exist tend to emphasize a connection between prison conditions (such as prison overcrowding) and riots, or discuss the dynamics of the modern prison riot. Prisons In Chile
Prison in Chile are generally poor. Prisons often are overcrowded and antiquated, with substandard sanitary conditions. Background In December 2009 there were approximately 50,000 prisoners in prisons designed to hold 33,000 inmates. Prisons in the Santiago Metropolitan Region were at nearly double capacity. The 2006 Diego Portales University School of Law study on prison conditions reiterated that prison services such as health care remained substandard. Prison food meets minimal nutritional needs, and prisoners can supplement their diets by buying food.
