El Ali ( so, Ceel Cali, ar, عيل علي, ʿAyl ʿAliyy) is a District in the central Hiran region of Somalia. El Ali has a population of around 500'000 inhabitants. The broader El Ali District has a total population of 543,345 residents. El Ali means (Ali's well). 99% of El-Ali's residents belong to the Galje'el Subclan of Dirisame. History The El Ali meteorite was identified by Kureym Mining and Rocks Company's staff in 2020 and trucked towards Mogadishu. Prior to that, the rock had been celebrated for between five and seven generations, featuring in songs, folklore, dances, and poems. Hiran ( so, Hiiraan, ar, هيران) is an administrative region ('' gobol'') in central Somalia and part of the Hirshabelle State. Overview Hiran is bordered by the Somali Region of Ethiopia (or the 1908 Convention Line) to the northwest, the Somali provinces of Galgudud to the northeast, Middle Shebelle (Shabeellaha Dhexe) to the south, Lower Shebelle (Shabellaha Hoose) to the southwest, and Bay and Bakool to the west. El Ali Meteorite
The El Ali meteorite (also known as Nightfall) is a 15.2 ton (16,800 kg) meteorite that was known to the local population in Somalia for generations, but first scientifically identified in 2020. Discovery and identification El Ali was found in a limestone valley 15 kilometres north of El Ali at GPS location 4°17.281’N, 44°53.893’E on September 2020. Local pastoralists were aware of the rock for between five and seven generations, and it featured in songs, folklore, dances, and poems. The meteorite was brought to the attention of the international community by Kureym Mining and Rocks Company's staff who were prospecting for opals in the area. They identified the rock and started moving it to Mogadishu before the Somalia government intervened. It is an IAB meteorite. Elaliite is a mineral with formula (or ) that was first synthesized in a laboratory in the 1980s and later identified in natural material in 2022 at which time the official mineral designation was given. The mineral is orthorhombic, with space group Cmmm (space group 65).
