Mrinal Sen
Mrinal Sen (''Beng.'' মৃণাল সেন; 14 May 1923 – 30 December 2018) was an Indian film director, and screenwriter known for his work primarily in Bengali, and few Hindi and Telugu language films. Regarded as one of the finest Indian filmmakers, along with his contemporaries Satyajit Ray, Ritwik Ghatak, and Tapan Sinha, Sen played major role in the New Wave cinema of eastern India. Sen has received various national and international honors including eighteen Indian National Film Awards. The Government of India honored him with the Padma Bhushan, and the Government of France honored him with the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, while Russian Government honored him with the Order of Friendship. Sen was also awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award for filmmakers in India. Arun Kaul
Arun Kaul (12 August 1933 – 21 July 2007) was a noted Kashmiri film maker and screenwriter. His film Diksha (1991), won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Movie for the year 1992. In the same year, he went on to win the Golden Lotus Award for the Best Hindi Film for ''Diksha'' (1992) at the National Film Awards India. He was the screenplay assistant to veteran filmmaker Gulzar, for the films ''Ijaazat'' (1987) and ''Lekin'' (1990). He was one of producers of the noted Science Serial ''TURNING POINT''. He also produced a Serial on Kashmir called ''KASHMIR FILE''. Kaul also wrote screenplay for the film Yash Chopra's Chandni (1989). He produced a film named '' Ek Adhuri Kahani'' directed by Mrinal Sen, a Bengali film maker in 1972. He was a key figure in Film Society movement. Kaul died on 21 July 2007, in New Delhi. Subodh Ghosh
Subodh Ghosh (14 September 1909 – 10 March 1980) was a noted Indian author of Bengali literature and a journalist with the Kolkata-based daily newspaper ''Ananda Bazar Patrika''. Born at Hazaribagh on 14 September 1909, now in Jharkhand, he studied in St. Columba's College as well as privately with scholar Mahesh Chandra Ghosh. At the beginning of his career, he worked as a bus conductor to support himself while writing on the side. His best known work, ''Bharat Premkatha'', is about the romances of epic Indian characters and has remained very popular in the Bengali literary world. Many of his stories have been adapted for Indian films, most notably Ritwik Ghatak's ''Ajantrik'' (1958) and Bimal Roy's '' Sujata'' (1959). Utpal Dutt
Utpal Dutta () (29 March 1929 – 19 August 1993) was an Indian actor, director, and writer-playwright. He was primarily an actor in Bengali theatre, where he became a pioneering figure in Modern Indian theatre, when he founded the "Little Theatre Group" in 1949. This group enacted many English, Shakespearean and Brecht plays, in a period now known as the "Epic theatre" period, before it immersed itself completely in highly political and radical theatre. His plays became an apt vehicle for the expression of his Marxist ideologies, visible in socio-political plays such as ''Kallol'' (1965), ''Manusher Adhikar'', ''Louha Manob'' (1964), ''Tiner Toloar'' and ''Maha-Bidroha''. Shekhar Chatterjee
Shekhar Chatterjee (1924–1990) was an Indian actor and film director. Career Chatterjee was born in Kolkata in 1924. He began his career in the Bengali theatre in the 1950s. He was associated with a number of leftist theatre groups, including the Communist Party's Indian People's Theatre Association, Utpal Dutt's Little Theatre Group, and Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, as well as his own group, Theatre Unit, which he formed in 1958. As a stage actor he was well known for his Shakespearean roles and for playing Shardul Singh in Dutt's 1965 play ''Kallol''. His directorial work focused on works by German-language playwrights Bertold Brecht, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Peter Handke, and Franz Xaver Kroetz. Chatterjee's Brecht productions were rarely adapted to a local setting, and while critics unanimously praised this approach as "authentic", his colleague Dutt attacked it for failing to communicate Brecht's political symbolism to an Indian audience.
