The Guerrilla Army Of The Poor (, EGP) was a Guatemalan leftist guerrilla movement, which commanded significant support among indigenous Maya people during the Guatemalan Civil War. Formation __NOTOC__ In the aftermath of the 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état a series of leftist insurgencies began in the Guatemalan countryside, against the United States-supported military governments of the country. A prominent guerrilla group among these insurgents was the Rebel Armed Forces (Spanish: Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes, FAR). The FAR was largely crushed by a counter-insurgency campaign carried out by the Guatemalan government with the help of the U.S. in the late 1960s. Between 2,800 and 8,000 FAR supporters were killed, and hundreds of leftists in urban areas were kidnapped, assassinated, or disappeared. The Guatemalan Civil War was fought from 1960 to 1996 between the government of Guatemala and various Left-wing politics, leftist rebel groups. The Guatemalan government forces committed Guatemalan genocide, genocide against the Maya population of Guatemala during the civil war and there were widespread human rights violations against civilians. The context of the struggle was based on longstanding issues over land distribution. Wealthy Guatemalans, mainly of White Latin Americans#Guatemala, European descent, and foreign companies like the American United Fruit Company had control over much of the land leading to conflicts with the rural, disproportionately indigenous, peasants who worked the land. A guerrilla foco is a small cadre of revolutionaries operating in a nation's countryside. Luis Augusto Turcios Lima (23 November 1941 – 2 October 1966) was a Guatemalan army officer and leader of the Rebel Armed Forces (''Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes'', or FAR). Turcios Lima entered military service at age 15, graduating as second lieutenant. He then received commando training at Fort Benning, Georgia USA. On his return to Guatemala he undertook military service in Petén, and later participated in the 13 November 1960 military uprising against President Miguel Ydígoras. The 1954 Guatemalan coup d'état () deposed the democratically elected Guatemalan President Jacobo Árbenz and marked the end of the Guatemalan Revolution.
