Alfred Einhorn
Alfred Einhorn (27 February 1856 – 21 March 1917) was a German chemist most notable for first synthesizing procaine in 1905 which he patented under the name Novocain. Until that time the primary anesthetic in use was cocaine, however its undesirable side effects (including toxicity and addiction) led scientists to seek out newer anesthetic drugs. Novocain was found to be comparatively safe and effective, although its anesthetic effects were weaker than cocaine and some patients proved highly allergic. However, none of the other anesthetics developed during this period proved more effective and Novocain quickly became the standard local anesthesia. Although its use has largely been replaced by lidocaine, it is still in use today, most frequently in dentistry. Lena Einhorn
Lena Einhorn (born 19 May 1954) is a Swedish director and writer and former physician. Early life and family Einhorn was born on 19 May 1954 in Spånga, Sweden. Her mother, Nina, escaped the Warsaw ghetto during World War II and settled in Sweden, and her father, Jerzy, was a cancer specialist, politician and Holocaust survivor who wrote in 1966 a book about what he had experienced. Her younger brother is doctor and author, Stefan Einhorn. Career After graduating from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm with a doctorate in virology and tumor biology, she worked as a doctor, specialising in tumour viruses and the causes of cancer in fetuses and newborns. She changed careers when she lived in the United States in the 1980s and began working as a medical editor at Lifetime Television where she also produced and wrote medical documentaries. Stefan Einhorn
Stefan Einhorn (born October 26, 1955, in Stockholm) is a Swedish doctor, professor and writer. He is the son of Jerzy and Nina Einhorn, as well as the brother of Lena Einhorn. Biography He received a degree from the Karolinska Institute in 1980 after presenting his thesis. In 1999 he became a professor of Molecular oncology at the Karolinska Institute. Richard Einhorn (born 1952) is an American composer of contemporary classical music. Einhorn graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia University in 1975, and studied composition and electronic music with Jack Beeson, Vladimir Ussachevsky, and Mario Davidovsky. His best-known work, ''Voices of Light'' (1994) is an oratorio scored for soloists, chorus, orchestra and a bell. Sir Samuel Martin Queen's Counsel, QC (1801 – 9 January 1883) was an Anglo-Irish politician and judge. Early life and education Martin was born in 1801, the son of Samuel Martin of Calmore, County Londonderry. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, receiving a BA in 1821 and an MA in 1832. A pioneer in cancer treatment research, Einhorn developed cisplatin-based chemotherapy regimens that increased cure rates while minimizing toxic side effects.
