Eglisau Railway Bridge
The Eglisau railway bridge, or ''Eisenbahnbrücke Eglisau'', is a single-track railway bridge which carries the Eglisau-Neuhausen railway line, Eglisau to Neuhausen line across the Rhine in Switzerland. Both ends of the bridge lie within the Eglisau, municipality of Eglisau and the canton of Zurich. Technical Details The bridge was built between the years of 1895 and 1897 by the Swiss Northeastern Railway at a cost of 980,000 Swiss francs. The bridge has a total length of and has a height of above river level. The principal span comprises a long and high iron truss bridge. Several natural stone masonry approaches with piers up to 50m in height lead to the bridge from the north and south of the steel truss. The original carriageway, consisting of a ballasted track on Zores iron profiles, was replaced by a steel trough with ballast in 1982/1983. Eglisau is a municipality in the district of Bülach in the canton of Zürich in Switzerland. History Eglisau is first mentioned in 892 as several independent farm houses known as ''Ouwa''. In 1238 it was mentioned as ''Owe'', in 1304 as ''ze Seglinger Owe'', in 1332 as ''ze Eglins Owe'' and in 1352 as ''ze Eglisowe''. It is located at the crossing of two major transport routes. The location along both sides of the Rhine river allowed it to dominate locate ship traffic. It was also the site of a bridge which made the north–south road between the Klettgau and the Zürichgau.
