Efim Alexandrov
Efim Alexandrov (born Efimian Ziсerman; 13 May 1960, Pidvolochysk Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukrainian SSR) is a Russian artist of the "spoken word” genre (stand-up comedian) and performer of Jewish music. He focuses in particular on Yiddish folk songs, intent on preserving a culture of Yiddish music that is considered endangered in Eastern Europe and Russia. He is a Meritorious Artist. (2007). Parents Alexandrov's parents, Lubov Efimovna and Boris Mikhailovich Ziсerman, were born in the township of Bershad in Vinnytsia Oblast and later interned as Bershad Ghetto prisoners. After the liberation of Bershad in 1944, Boris Ziсerman was called up for military service in the Soviet Army. Following the end of the war in Western Ukraine and his military discharge, he attended and graduated from Lviv University. Crooners
Crooner is a term used to describe primarily male singers who performed using a smooth style made possible by better microphones which picked up quieter sounds and a wider range of frequencies, allowing the singer to access a more dynamic range and perform in a more intimate manner. It is derived from the old verb "to croon" (meaning "to speak or sing softly"). This suggestion of intimacy was supposedly wildly attractive to women, especially younger ones such as teenage girls, known at the time as " bobby soxers". The crooning style developed out of singers who performed with big bands, and reached its height in the 1940s to late 60s. Crooning is epitomised by jazz vocalists like Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra, although Sinatra once said that he did not consider himself or Crosby to be "crooners". The Songs Of The Jewish Shtetle
The Songs of the Jewish Shtetle is a cultural musical project aimed at preserving the Jewish cultural heritage. The project has gathered songs in Yiddish, a language put on the Red List of Threatened Languages by UNESCO. Before World War II the number of native Yiddish speakers amounted to 11 million people. During the Holocaust 6 million Jewish people were killed, thus the number of Yiddish speakers halved. The language continued in literature, oral speech, Ashkenazi folklore, and in songs. The project is unique as the Jewish songs in Yiddish, which had been persecuted in various places that Jews had settled, and generally played only by small klezmer ensembles beforehand, were for the first time performed by a large symphony orchestra.
