Effects Of Hurricane Irma In The British Virgin Islands
The effects of Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands were significant in terms of both human and socio-economic impact on the Territory. Hurricane Irma struck the British Virgin Islands as a Category 5 hurricane during the daylight hours of Wednesday, 6 September 2017. It caused widespread destruction, and killed a total of four people. The eye of the hurricane traveled over the three major islands in the group: Virgin Gorda, Tortola and Jost Van Dyke. The hurricane caused extensive damage to property and infrastructure in the Territory, and caused statistically significant levels of depopulation. Hurricane Irma was an extremely powerful Cape Verde hurricane that caused widespread destruction across its path in September 2017. Irma was the first Category 5 hurricane to strike the Leeward Islands on record, followed by Maria two weeks later. At the time, it was considered as the most powerful hurricane on record in the open Atlantic region, outside of the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico until it was surpassed by Hurricane Dorian two years later. Kyron McMaster (born 3 January 1997) is an athlete from the British Virgin Islands specialising in the 400 metres hurdles. He represented his country at the 2017 World Championships where he finished in the top three in his heat only to be disqualified for a lane infringement. Earlier, he won a bronze medal at the 2016 World U20 Championships. His personal best in the event is 47.08 seconds set in finishing fourth in the final of the 2020 Olympic Games 400m hurdles, on August 3, 2021. This is the current national record. Hurricane Jose (2017)
Hurricane Jose was a powerful and erratic tropical cyclone which was the longest-lived Atlantic hurricane since Hurricane Nadine in 2012. Jose was the tenth named storm, fifth hurricane, and third major hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. Jose developed into a tropical storm on September 5 from a tropical wave that left the west coast of Africa nearly a week prior. A period of rapid intensification ensued on September 6, when Jose reached hurricane intensity. On September 8, it reached its peak intensity as a high-end Category 4 hurricane with 1-minute sustained winds of 155 mph. However, due to wind shear, Jose weakened over the next few days as it completed an anti-cyclonic loop north of Hispaniola. Peebles Hospital is the main public hospital in the British Virgin Islands. The hospital is located in the capital, Road Town, on the island of Tortola. It was founded in 1922 by Major H.W. Peebles, and was originally known as the Cottage Hospital. The main hospital building six stories plus a mechanical penthouse, with 168,700 square feet of floor space. It has facilities for patient care, surgery, and recovery, and an intensive care unit. Name In the 1950s the hospital was renamed after Major Peebles. During the early 1990s it was briefly renamed the H.R. Penn Hospital (after H.R. Penn) before reverting to its current name. Elmore Stoutt High School
Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) is a grade 7-12 secondary school in Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands. History It was previously BVI High School (BVIHS). In September 2012 Wade Tobin became acting principal, but Vanessa Garraway became the acting principal when the former went to the hospital. In 2017 Hurricane Irma affected BVI and damaged the school building, so students had to move to the former Clarence Thomas Ltd building in Pasea Estate. The students were divided into two shifts as the temporary building is not big enough to accommodate the students at the same time. Students in the morning shift are to go to after school programmes to keep themselves occupied. The rebuilt school reopened its doors January 4th, 2023. Chapman (born 22 July 1990 in Bristol, United Kingdom) is a squash player who represents the British Virgin Islands in regional Games as well as at the CAC Games and Commonwealth Games Melbourne 2006, Delhi 2010, Glasgow 2014 and Gold Coast 2018.
