Edwina Kennedy
Edwina Jane Kirkby (née Kennedy), born 10 June 1959, is a former Australian amateur golfer. In 1978, she was the first Australian to win the British Ladies Amateur and was a member of the winning 1978 Australian Espirito Santo Trophy team. Early life and education In 1959, Kennedy was born in Sydney, Australia. During her childhood, Kennedy played at a golf club in Wentworth Falls, New South Wales. For her post-secondary education, Kennedy went to Macquarie University for a degree in economics. Amateur career During the 1970s and 1980s, Kennedy won multiple amateur golf championships throughout Australia. Some of her Australian championship titles during this time period include back to back wins at the Australian Girls' Amateur from 1976 to 1979 and the Australian Women's Amateur in 1986. Commonwealth Trophy
The Astor Trophy is a women's team golf tournament between teams of amateurs golfers from Great Britain and Ireland, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa. It has been played every four years since 1959. From its foundation until 2007 it was called the Commonwealth Trophy. South Africa did not compete from 1963 to 1991. While it was called the Commonwealth Trophy, Irish golfers were not eligible. The trophy was presented by Nancy Astor, Viscountess Astor. Format Each team plays the other four teams. Two matches are played each day, the tournament lasting five days. Each match is contested over one day with foursomes in the morning and singles in the afternoon. Gladys Hay Memorial Cup
The Australian Women's Interstate Teams Matches were an amateur team golf competition for women between the states of Australia. From 1933 it was contested for the Gladys Hay Memorial Cup. The final format was a round-robin tournament, each team playing the other five teams, after which the top two teams play a final. Each team consisted of six players. Five competed in each round-robin contest with all six playing in the final. Only singles matches were played. In 2020 the format for interstate team matches was changed so that the men's and women's event were combined into a single mixed-team event, the Australian Interstate Teams Matches. The 1986 Espirito Santo Trophy took place 14–17 October at Lagunita Country Club in Caracas, Venezuela. It was the 12th women's golf World Amateur Team Championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 27 team entries, each with three players. The best two scores for each round counted towards the team total. The Spain team won the trophy, earning the title for the first time, beating team France by three strokes. France earned the silver medal while the United States team took the bronze at third place one more stroke back. Teams 27 teams entered the event and completed the competition. The United States team won the Trophy, defending the title from two years ago and winning their ninth title, beating team France by two strokes.
