Edwin Smith (cricketer, Born 1848)
Edwin George Smith (29 August 1848 – 5 April 1880) was an English cricketer. Smith was a right-handed batsman who bowled right-arm medium pace. He was born at Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. Smith made his first-class debut for Gloucestershire against Nottinghamshire in 1875. In this match, he scored 12 runs in Gloucestershire's first-innings, before being dismissed by William Clarke, with the match ending in a draw. The following season he made his second and final first-class appearance for the county, against Yorkshire. In this match, he scored 14 runs in Gloucestershire's first-innings, before being dismissed by Tom Armitage, while in their second-innings he was dismissed for a duck by Robert Clayton. He died at the town of his birth on 5 April 1880. Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field, at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails (small sticks) balanced on three stumps. Robert Clayton (cricketer)
Robert Owen Clayton (1 January 1844 – 26 November 1901) was a Welsh first-class cricketer. Born Penygroes, Caernarvonshire, Clayton was a right arm fast bowler, he played 70 matches for Yorkshire between 1870 and 1879, and 121 in all, with 33 appearances for the MCC between 1872 and 1881, plus appearances for the North of England (1871-1877), Single (1871), Players of the North (1876-1877), United North of England Eleven (1876) and an England XI (1877). He was a devastating bowler on his day, taking 254 first-class wickets in all matches at 16.75. His best bowling, 8-66 in a Roses Match, was one of eighteen occasions when he took five wickets in an innings, and he twice took 10 wickets in a match. He had a strike rate of a wicket every 43.12 deliveries. He also scored 1,709 first-class runs, batting right-handed down the order. Tom Armitage
Thomas Armitage (25 April 1848 – 21 September 1922) was an English first-class cricketer, who in 1877 took part in what are retrospectively recognised as the first two Test matches played by England. The players in these matches having been alphabetically sorted, Armitage is the #1 capped England player. Life and career Armitage was born in Sheffield, Yorkshire. He made his first-class debut for Yorkshire against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge in 1872, opening the batting in the first innings. He failed to make much of an impression in the game, scoring 0 and 1, taking 0–19 from eight overs and taking no catches. He next appeared for Yorkshire in 1874 against a United South of England XI, but again did little. Armitage's county cricket career took off in 1875, when he took 22 wickets in nine matches at just 7.59 apiece, including 7–27 against Derbyshire, and recorded the first of his four half-centuries, 68 not out against Surrey. William Clarke (cricketer, Born 1798)
William Clarke (24 December 1798 – 25 August 1856) was an English cricketer and team manager who played first-class cricket from 1826 to 1855. He founded, managed and captained the All-England Eleven. He has been described as "one of certain figures who, in the history of cricket, stand like milestones along the way". Clarke was born at Nottingham and died at Wandsworth in Surrey. In the late 1820s, he lost sight in one eye after being struck there by a fives ball on the court behind the Bell Inn in Nottingham. First-class career Clarke was originally a bricklayer by trade, but from his earnings as a bowler and an advantageous marriage he was able in 1837 to take up the traditional cricketer's trade of publican. He married Mary Chapman, the landlady of the Trent Bridge Inn, and they arranged for the land behind the inn to be made available.
