Edwin Hughes (musician)
Edwin Hughes (August 15, 1884 — July 17, 1965) was an American pianist, music educator, music editor, and composer. In 1940 he co-founded the National Music Council. Life and career Born in Washington, D.C., Hughes studied piano with S. M. Fabian in his native city before receiving further training on that instrument with Rafael Joseffy in New York City in 1906 and 1907. From 1907 through 1910 he studied with Theodor Leschetizky in Vienna; notably working as his assistant in 1909 and 1910. Hughes became a well regarded teacher of piano, and based his own approach on the pedagogies of both Joseffy and Leschetizky. He began his teaching career in 1910 at the Ganapol School of Musical Art in Detroit, Michigan. In 1912 he returned to Europe to make his debut as a concert pianist in Vienna. Sir Edwin Hughes (27 May 1832 – 15 September 1904) was an English solicitor and Conservative Party (UK), Conservative politician who sat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom, House of Commons from 1885 to 1902. Biography Hughes was born at Droitwich, Worcestershire, the son of William Hughes and his wife Elizabeth Gibbs. He was educated at Birmingham Grammar School and was admitted a solicitor in 1860. He moved to London where he became a solicitor to Local Board of Health. He was vice chairman of the Modern Building Society and chairman of Suburban Property Co. His political interests included being a member of the London School Board, and of the Metropolitan Board of Works. He was founder and vice president of the Metropolitan Local Government (Officers') Association. He was also lieutenant-colonel in the 1st Volunteer Brigade, London Division of the Royal Artillery. Edwin Hughes (soldier)
Edwin Hughes (12 December 1830 – 18 May 1927), nicknamed "Balaclava Ned", was a British Army soldier and the last survivor of the famous Charge of the Light Brigade during the Crimean War of 1854–56. Early life Hughes was born in Wrexham, Wales on 12 December 1830, one of nine children to William (a tin-plate worker) and Mary ( née Jones) Hughes. He was baptised at St Giles' Church, Wrexham on 5 January 1831. Hughes became a shoemaker until he joined the 13th Light Dragoons, part of the Light Brigade, at Liverpool on 1 November 1852. He joined his regiment at Hounslow as 1506 Private Hughes, and in 1854 he sailed with them from Portsmouth to the Crimea. Crimean War On 25 October 1854 Hughes rode in the charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava, where his horse was killed under him, trapping his leg. Edwin Holt Hughes (7 December 1866 – 12 February 1950) was an American bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church, elected in 1908. Birth and family Edwin was born in Moundsville, West Virginia, the son of the Rev. Thomas B. and Louisa (Holt) Hughes. He married Isabel Ebbert on 8 June 1892. She predeceased him. They had six children: Isabel, Holt, Ebbert, Caroline, Anna Louise, and Francis. Education He studied at West Virginia University beginning in 1887, graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1889 ( A.B. degree) and 1892 ( A.M. degree). He then attended Boston University School of Theology, 1889-92.
