Edwards County is a county located on the Edwards Plateau in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census its population was 1,422. The county seat is Rocksprings. The county was created in 1858 and organized in 1883. It is named for Haden Edwards, an early settler of Nacogdoches, Texas. The Edwards Aquifer and Edwards Plateau are named after the county by reason of their locations. History * The early inhabitants were Lipan Apache and Comanche. * 1762 Looking for protection from Comanches, Lipan Apache chief El Gran Cabezón persuades Franciscans and the Spanish military to establish San Lorenzo de la Santa Cruz Mission on the Nueces River. Edwards County Courthouse And Jail
Edwards County Courthouse is located in the center of downtown Rocksprings, Texas. The Courthouse was built by architects Ben Davey and Bruno Schort in the Romanesque Revival Style. The Franciscans are a group of related Mendicant orders, mendicant Christianity, Christian Catholic religious order, religious orders within the Catholic Church. Texas State Highway 41
State Highway 41 (SH 41) is a state highway that runs through the Texas Hill Country in Kerr, Real, and Edwards Counties. History SH 41 was proposed on April 22, 1919 as a route from north of Del Rio to Boerne via Rocksprings and Kerrville. On August 21, 1923, the designation was truncated to Mountain Home, with the section east of Mountain Home being transferred to SH 27. U.S. Route 377 (US 377) is a north–south United States highway. Originally formed as a short spur to connect Denton, Texas with Fort Worth, Texas, it has since been extended to Oklahoma and Mexico. Route description Texas The southern terminus is in Del Rio, Texas at an intersection with U.S. Route 90. It goes north of town co-signed with U.S. Route 277 for 20 miles (32 km). After splitting off, it enters Edwards County and Carta Valley. It meets SH 55 at the county seat, Rocksprings, before serving as the western terminus of SH 41. Devil's Sinkhole State Natural Area is a natural bat habitat near the city of Rocksprings in Edwards County in the U.S. state of Texas. Carved by water erosion, the cavern is home to several million Mexican free-tailed bats that emerge at sunset during April through October. History The Devil's Sinkhole is a vertical natural bat habitat. The opening drops down to reveal a cavern some below. While likely known to native peoples, the cavern was first discovered in modern times by Ammon Billings, a local rancher leading a scouting party of five, west of Hackberry Creek in Edwards County in 1876. Billings fired at a marauding party of hostile Indians and believed he hit one. Kinney County is a county located in the U.S. state of Texas. As of the 2020 census, its population was 3,129. Its county seat is Brackettville.
