Edward Ambrose Dyson
Edward Ambrose Dyson (15 December 1908 – 26 November 1952), often known as "Amby" or "Amb Dyson" was an Australian illustrator, comics artist and political cartoonist. Biography He was born in Melbourne on 15 December 1908, the son of Ambrose Dyson (1876–1913) and Mabel Fraser. Dyson was a student at Yarra Park State School until 1922, when he started working as a labourer, which lasted 14 years, when he took some lessons and embarked on a full-time artistic career. In 1944 he was working as a cartoonist for the army newspaper ''SALT'' (for Sea, Air, Land Transport). It was there he became a friend and associate of Frank Hardy, sharing Hardy's left-wing views and joining the Communist Party of Australia. He contributed drawings to Hardy's masterpiece ''Power Without Glory''. Dyson died on 26 November 1952. Melbourne ( ; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm'' or ''Naarm'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Ambrose Dyson
Ambrose Dyson (1876 – 4 June 1913), often known as Amb Dyson was an Australian illustrator and political cartoonist, born at Alfredton, near Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, the son of George Dyson, then a hawker and later a mining engineer, and his wife Jane, ''née'' Mayall. He was educated at state schools at Ballarat and South Melbourne. He was the older brother of the brilliant Will Dyson and the writer Edward Dyson. He may have studied at the Melbourne National Gallery Art School and certainly took private lessons with Tom Durkin, but was mostly self-taught. Frank Hardy
Francis Joseph Hardy (21 March 1917 – 28 January 1994), published as Frank J. Hardy and also under the pseudonym Ross Franklyn, was an Australian novelist and writer. He is best known for his 1950 novel ''Power Without Glory'', and for his later political activism. He brought the plight of Aboriginal Australians to international attention with the publication of his book, ''The Unlucky Australians'', in 1968, written during the Gurindji Strike. He ran unsuccessfully for the Australian parliament twice as a Communist Party of Australia candidate. The Communist Party of Australia (CPA), known as the Australian Communist Party (ACP) from 1944 to 1951, was an Australian political party founded in 1920. The party existed until roughly 1991, with its membership and influence having been in a steady decline since its peak in 1945. Like most communist parties in the west, the party was heavily involved in the labour movement and the trade unions. Its membership, popularity and influence grew significantly during most of the interwar period before reaching its climax in 1945, where the party achieved a membership of slightly above 22,000 members. Although the party did not achieve a federal MP, Fred Paterson was elected to the Parliament of Queensland (for Bowen) at the 1944 state election. Power Without Glory
''Power Without Glory'' is a 1950 historical novel written by Australian author Frank Hardy, following the life and ambitions of John West, a politician born into a working-class family who rises to prominence in Australian federal politics. Following the novel's publication, Ellen Wren, the wife of bookmaker and businessman John Wren sued Hardy for libel, claiming that the characters of John West and his wife Nellie were modelled on the Wrens, and that Nellie's affair in the novel was libellous to Ellen Wren. Ultimately Hardy was cleared and publication allowed. Publication The work was originally self-published, with illustrations by Hardy's friend "Amb" Dyson, with the subtitle "a novel in three parts by Frank J. Hardy, Ross Franklyn".
