Edvardas Adamkavičius
Edvardas Adamkavičius (March 31, 1888 – May 10, 1957) was a Lithuanian general. Early life He was born in Pikeliai, Telšiai County, Lithuania. Interwar Lithuanian Army He enlisted in the Lithuanian Army in 1918. He was made a lieutenant general on September 6, 1933, a brigadier general in 1936 and a divisional general on February 16, 1937. He retired in 1940. Occupation and emigration After the occupation of Lithuania by the Soviet Union, he fled to Germany. He emigrated to the United States in 1949. He died in Worcester, Massachusetts. Family He was the uncle of future President of Lithuania, Valdas Adamkus. The Order of the Cross of Vytis ( lt, Vyčio Kryžiaus ordinas) is a Lithuanian presidential award conferred for heroic defence of Lithuania's freedom and independence. The initial design was based on the Polish Virtuti Militari with an addition of crossed swords, but no such crosses were actually produced. Valdas Adamkus
Valdas Adamkus (; born Voldemaras Adamkavičius; 3 November 1926) is a Lithuanian-American politician, diplomat and civil engineer. He served as the 5th and 7th President of Lithuania from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2004 to 2009. Adamkus' first tenure as president lasted for five years, from 26 February 1998 to 28 February 2003, following his defeat by Rolandas Paksas in the 2003 presidential election. Paksas was later impeached and removed from office by a parliamentary vote on 6 April 2004. Soon afterwards, when a new election was announced, Adamkus again ran for president and was re-elected. His approval ratings increased during this period and become a highly regarded moral authority in the state. He was succeeded as president on 12 July 2009 by Dalia Grybauskaitė. Lieutenant general (Lt Gen, LTG and similar) is a three-star military rank (NATO code OF-8) used in many countries. The rank traces its origins to the Middle Ages, where the title of lieutenant general was held by the second-in-command on the battlefield, who was normally subordinate to a captain general. In modern armies, lieutenant general normally ranks immediately below general and above major general; it is equivalent to the navy rank of vice admiral, and in air forces with a separate rank structure, it is equivalent to air marshal.
