Education Of Welsh History
Until the latter part of the 20th century, the teaching of Welsh history was predominantly taught from a British or Southern English perspective. In recent decades, there has been a notable increase in emphasis on the teaching of Welsh history, a trend that has persisted into the 21st century. Presently, it is mandatory for schools in Wales to incorporate Welsh history into their curriculum. This requirement was not enforced until the 1990s. This mandatory inclusion of Welsh history is now an integral component of the Curriculum for Wales (2022–present), as stipulated by the Welsh Government. As part of this new curriculum, the teaching of Welsh history, alongside the study of ethnic minority history, has been introduced and mandated since September 2022. History Grounded
History Grounded or Hanes yn y Tir (Welsh version) is a book on the history of Wales by Welsh historian Elin Jones. The book is aimed at children and is used in all schools in Wales to aid Welsh history teaching and is provided in both Welsh and English. About The book was launched on 29 September 2021. The book is a visual journey of the last 5,000 years of Welsh history and includes references to the first people to live in Wales, the importance of Owain Glyndŵr, Wales' role in the slave trade and the influence of the sea. The book's cover shows the Red Wall of Wales including references to local areas and campaigns including LGBT+ and Black lives matter. According to the publisher of the book, Gwasg Carreg Gwalch, suggested that the book is "must-have" and is suitable for children aged 8 to 12. Welsh Labour ( cy, Llafur Cymru) is the branch of the United Kingdom Labour Party in Wales and the largest party in modern Welsh politics. The Senedd (; ), officially known as the Welsh Parliament in English and () in Welsh, is the devolved, unicameral legislature of Wales. A democratically elected body, it makes laws for Wales, agrees certain taxes and scrutinises the Welsh Government. 2021 Welsh Labour–Plaid Cymru Agreement
In December 2021, the Welsh Labour government and Plaid Cymru signed a three-year co-operation agreement, where the two parties agreed to work together in 46 policy areas. The agreement was not a coalition or confidence and supply agreement; Plaid Cymru remained in opposition but appointed advisers to offices of the Welsh Government. It was announced in November 2021, by the leaders of the two parties, Mark Drakeford, leader of Welsh Labour and First Minister, and Adam Price, leader of Plaid Cymru, following months of talks. The agreement was ratified by both parties, voted for by Plaid Cymru's party membership, but criticised by the Welsh Conservatives and some Welsh Labour representatives. Leighton Andrews (born 11 August 1957) is an academic and former Welsh Labour politician. He was the National Assembly for Wales member for Rhondda (National Assembly for Wales constituency), Rhondda from 2003 until 2016. He was Department for Education and Skills (Wales), Minister for Children, Education & Lifelong Learning from 2009 to 2011, then Minister for Education and Skills in the Welsh Government until his resignation on 25 June 2013 after an alleged conflict between his own departmental policy and his active campaigning to save a school in his constituency. Victoria Kirstyn Williams (born 19 March 1971) is a Welsh politician who served as Minister for Education in the Welsh Government from 2016 to 2021. Curriculum For Wales (2022–present)
The Curriculum for Wales is the curriculum which is being introduced in state-funded education in Wales for pupils aged three to sixteen years. The curriculum's rollout began in 2022. As of September 2023, it is statutorily required for all pupils apart from those in school years 9, 10 and 11. The curriculum has been developed based on a report commissioned in 2014. Amongst other changes, it gives schools greater autonomy over what they teach children. Views on the curriculum have been varied.
