Eduard Georg Gustav von Below (December 29, 1856 - January 13, 1942) was a German General of the Infantry who notably served in World War I. Biography Early life and family Eduard came from the old noble family von Below. He was a son of Eduard Friedrich Wilhelm von Below (1815-1894) and his wife Marie Anna Friederike, born von Quistorp (1824-1886). On March 11, 1887 at Scharstorf near Rostock Below married Countess Luise Friederike Agnes von Rantzau (born August 14, 1865 in Kiel, † February 15, 1947 in Eutin). Order Of The Red Eagle
The Order of the Red Eagle (german: Roter Adlerorden) was an order of chivalry of the Kingdom of Prussia. It was awarded to both military personnel and civilians, to recognize valor in combat, excellence in military leadership, long and faithful service to the kingdom, or other achievements. As with most German (and most other European) orders, the Order of the Red Eagle could only be awarded to commissioned officers or civilians of approximately equivalent status. However, there was a medal of the order, which could be awarded to non-commissioned officers and enlisted men, lower ranking civil servants and other civilians. The 5th Army (german: 5. Armee / Armeeoberkommando 5 / A.O.K. 5) was an army level command of the German Army in World War I. It was formed on mobilization in August 1914 seemingly from the VII Army Inspection. The army was disbanded in 1919 during demobilization after the war. History In August 1914 the command of 5th Army was assigned to Crown Prince Wilhelm of Germany, heir to the Hohenzollern throne, with General Schmidt von Knobelsdorf serving as his chief of staff, and would remain thus until late 1916. The 9th Division (''9. Division'') was a unit of the Prussian/German Army. It was formed in Glogau (now Głogów, Poland) in November 1816 as a brigade, became the 10th Division on September 5, 1818, and was renumbered the 9th Division on February 28, 1820. The division was subordinated in peacetime to the V Army Corps (''V. Armeekorps''). The division was disbanded in 1919 during the demobilization of the German Army after World War I. The division was recruited primarily in the Province of Silesia, primarily in Lower Silesia. Combat chronicle The division fought in the Austro-Prussian War in 1866, including the Battle of Königgrätz. The Guards Fusilier Regiment (german: Garde-Füsilier-Regiment) or Guards Fusiliers was an infantry unit of the Guards Corps of the Prussian Army garrisoned in Berlin. In keeping with the genteel nature of the unit, most of its officer corps were nobility. At the time of the German Empire it commanded soldiers guarding the Wache. History In 1826 the Guards Reserve Infantry (Landwehr) Regiment (''Garde-Reserve-Infanterie (Landwehr) Regiment'') was founded. The 2nd Division (''2. Division'') was a unit of the Prussian/German Army. It was formed in Danzig (now Gdańsk, Poland) in March 1816 as a Troop Brigade (''Truppen-Brigade''). It became the 2nd Division on September 5, 1818. In 1890, the headquarters of the division was relocated to Königsberg (now Kaliningrad, Russia), then the capital of East Prussia.Wegner, p. 91.
