Edom, Virginia
Edom is an unincorporated community located in Rockingham County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. It is located along State Route 42 at the crossroads with State Route 721, north of Harrisonburg and southeast of Singers Glen. Linville Creek flows through the village. Near Edom on January 14, 1794, Dr. Jesse Bennett performed the first Caesarian section and oophorectomy in the United States, operating on his wife to give birth to their daughter. A historical marker was erected by the state of Virginia in 1983 commemorating the event. Baxter House, John K. Jesse Bennett
Jesse Bennett (July 10, 1769 – July 13, 1842) was the first American physician to perform a successful Caesarean section, which he performed on his own wife at the birth of their only child on January 14, 1794. Biography Early life Bennett was born in Frankford, Philadelphia, on July 13, 1769. He earned a B.A. Degree at Philadelphia College before apprenticing with Benjamin Rush and attending medical school. In April 1791, he received the title Doctor of Medicine, at the same time he received his M. A. degree. Bennett married Elizabeth Hogg in 1793 and settled in Rockingham County, Virginia, establishing his practice in a log cabin. When Elizabeth became pregnant, Bennett engaged a Dr. Humphrey of Staunton, Virginia, to attend Elizabeth at the delivery. Edom Store And Post Office
Edom Store and Post Office, also known as John Chrisman Store and Myers and Company, is a historic store and post office located at Edom, Rockingham County, Virginia. It was built about 1835, and is a two-story, brick commercial building. It features a metal-sheathed gable roof, a five-bay façade with center entries on the first and second stories, and a one-story entry porch and a storefront added in the late-19th century. It has a two-story rear ell. The interior is transitional Federal-Greek Revival. Also on the property is a contributing frame barn dated to about 1900. Caesarean section, also known as C-section or caesarean delivery, is the surgical procedure by which one or more babies are delivered through an incision in the mother's abdomen, often performed because vaginal delivery would put the baby or mother at risk.
