Edmund Heathcote
Admiral Edmund Heathcote (29 January 1814 – 24 October 1881) was a Royal Navy officer who became Commander-in-Chief, Queenstown. Early life Heathcote was born in Hursley, Hampshire, England. He was the fourth son of Samuel Heathcote and Catherine Pickering. On 14 July 1844, in St. John's, Newfoundland, Edmund married his first wife, Elizabeth Lucy Law with whom he had two sons. In 1850, Lucy bore a third child, whose father was not Edmund; the couple were divorced on 9 March 1851, and Lucy appears to have taken their elder son, William (1845-1884), as well as her young child, to Australia, where her child's father had been transported for seven years penal servitude; William and Lucy both died in Australia. On 19 August 1852, Edmund married Jessie Hill, at St. Paul's Cathedral in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Admiral (Royal Navy)
Admiral is a senior rank of the Royal Navy, which equates to the NATO rank code OF-9, outranked only by the rank of admiral of the fleet. Royal Navy officers holding the ranks of rear admiral, vice admiral and admiral of the fleet are sometimes considered generically to be admirals. The rank of admiral is currently the highest rank to which a serving officer in the Royal Navy can be promoted, admiral of the fleet being in abeyance except for honorary promotions of retired officers and members of the Royal Family. Robert Coote (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Robert Coote (1 June 1820 – 17 March 1898) was a Royal Navy officer who went on to be Commander-in-Chief, China Station. Background Coote was a younger son of Sir Charles Coote, 9th Baronet, by Caroline Whaley, daughter of John Whaley, of Whaley Abbey, County Wicklow. Naval career Educated at Eton College, Coote joined the Royal Navy in 1833 and served on the coast of Syria in 1840. He was made commander of the sloop HMS ''Volcano'' in 1851 while serving in the West Africa Squadron. Promoted to captain in 1854, he commanded HMS ''Victory'' from 1860, HMS ''Gibraltar'' from 1864 and HMS ''Arethusa'' from 1867. He became Commander-in-Chief, Queenstown in 1874 and Commander-in-Chief, China in 1878. He retired in 1885. He is buried in Brookwood Cemetery in Woking Cemetery. First-rate
In the rating system of the British Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a first rate was the designation for the largest ships of the line. Originating in the Jacobean era with the designation of Ships Royal capable of carrying at least 400 men, the size and establishment of first-rates evolved over the following 250 years to eventually denote ships of the line carrying at least 80 guns across three gundecks. By the end of the eighteenth century, a first-rate carried no fewer than 100 guns and more than 850 crew, and had a measurement ( burthen) tonnage of some 2,000 tons. Third-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy, a third rate was a ship of the line which from the 1720s mounted between 64 and 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks (thus the related term two-decker). Years of experience proved that the third rate ships embodied the best compromise between sailing ability (speed, handling), firepower, and cost. So, while first-rates and second-rates were both larger and more powerful, third-rate ships were the optimal configuration. A sloop is a sailboat with a single mast typically having only one headsail in front of the mast and one mainsail aft of (behind) the mast. Such an arrangement is called a fore-and-aft rig, and can be rigged as a Bermuda rig with triangular sails fore and aft, or as a gaff-rig with triangular foresail(s) and a gaff rigged mainsail. Frigate
A frigate () is a type of warship. In different eras, the roles and capabilities of ships classified as frigates have varied somewhat. The name frigate in the 17th to early 18th centuries was given to any full-rigged ship built for speed and maneuverability, intended to be used in scouting, escort and patrol roles. The term was applied loosely to ships varying greatly in design. In the second quarter of the 18th century, the 'true frigate' was developed in France. This type of vessel was characterised by possessing only one armed deck, with an unarmed deck below it used for berthing the crew. Commander-in-Chief, Queenstown
The Commander-in-Chief, Coast of Ireland was both an admiral's post and a naval formation of the Royal Navy. It was based at Queenstown, now Cobh, in Ireland from 1797 to 1919. The admiral's headquarters was at Admiralty House, Cobh. HMS Highflyer (1851)
HMS ''Highflyer'' was a 21-gun wooden screw frigate (later re-designated a corvette) of the Royal Navy. She was built on the River Thames by C J Mare and launched on 13 August 1851. She spent twenty years in service, including action in the Crimean War and the Second Opium War, before being broken up at Portsmouth in May 1871. Design ''Highflyer'' was ordered as a small wooden frigate to a design by the Surveyor's Department of the Admiralty on 25 April 1847; she and her sister ''Esk'' were re-designated as corvettes in 1854.
