Ediz Gurel
Ediz Gurel (born 5 December 2008) is a Turkish chess player who received the FIDE title of Grandmaster (GM) in 2024. Chess career Gurel is currently the youngest IM, and secured the second of his three-required Grandmaster (GM) norms after finishing on 6/8 at the 2023 European Individual Chess Championship. Gurel finished second, on 7.5/9, in the Under-14 section of the 2022 European Youth Championship. Grandmaster (chess)
Grandmaster (GM) is a title awarded to chess players by the world chess organization FIDE. Apart from World Champion, Grandmaster is the highest title a chess player can attain. Once achieved, the title is held for life, though exceptionally it has been revoked for cheating. The title of Grandmaster, along with the lesser FIDE titles of International Master (IM) and FIDE Master (FM), is open to all players regardless of gender. The great majority of grandmasters are men, but 40 women have been awarded the GM title as of 2022, out of a total of about 2000 grandmasters. Since about the year 2000, most of the top 10 women have held the GM title. There is also a Woman Grandmaster title with lower requirements awarded only to women. FIDE Title
FIDE titles are awarded by the international chess governing body FIDE (''Fédération Internationale des Échecs'') for outstanding performance. The highest such title is Grandmaster (GM). Titles generally require a combination of Elo rating and norms (performance benchmarks in competitions including other titled players). Once awarded, titles are held for life except in cases of fraud or cheating. Open titles may be earned by all players, while women's titles are restricted to female players. Many strong female players hold both open and women's titles. FIDE also awards titles for arbiters, organizers and trainers. Velimir Ivić (; born 27 August 2002) is a Serbian chess grandmaster since 2020, an International Master since 2018 and a FIDE Master since 2016. As of July 2022, he is ranked the third-best player in Serbia by FIDE rating. 2023 Chess World Cup
The Chess World Cup 2023 was a 206-player single-elimination chess tournament that took place in Baku, Azerbaijan from 30 July to 24 August 2023. It was the 10th edition of the Chess World Cup. The top three finishers in the tournament qualified for the 2024 Candidates Tournament. The tournament was held in parallel with the Women's Chess World Cup 2023. Jan-Krzysztof Duda was the defending champion. He lost in the fifth round (last 16) to Fabiano Caruana. Format The tournament was an eight-round knockout event, with the top 50 seeds having been given a bye directly into the second round. The losers of the two semi-finals played a match for third place. The players who finished first, second, and third qualified for the Candidates Tournament 2024, a tournament to decide the challenger for the upcoming World Championship. World Youth Chess Champions
The World Youth Chess Championship is a FIDE-organized worldwide chess competition for boys and girls under the age of 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Twelve world champions are crowned every year.
