Editors Guild Of India
Editors Guild of India (EGI) is a non profit organization of journalists based in India. The organization has declared "objectives of protecting press freedom and for raising the standards of editorial leadership of newspapers and magazines". It was founded in 1978, by Kuldip Nayar. EGI has represented Indian newspapers in communications to the government. The first national convention of the Guild was held in Delhi on 18–19 March 1978. The guild does not function as a trade union. EGI is managed by its President with the assistance of General Secretary, a Treasurer and an Executive Committee. The official statements of EGI have highlighted the incidents of muzzling of the freedom of press and threats to the safety of journalists. Organization The members of the Guild are individuals. Kuldip Nayar
Kuldip Nayar (14 August 1923 – 23 August 2018) was an Indian journalist, syndicated columnist, human rights activist, author and former High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom noted for his long career as a left-wing political commentator. He was also nominated as a member of the Upper House of the Indian Parliament in 1997. Early life and education Nayar was born at Sialkot, Punjab, British India on 14 August 1923, in a Punjabi Hindu khatri family. He completed his B.A. (Hons.) from the Forman Christian College Lahore and LL.B. from the Law College Lahore. In 1952, he studied journalism from the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University on a scholarship. Career Nayar was initially an Urdu press reporter. 2021 Tripura Riots
The 2021 Tripura riots happened in the eponymous state of north-eastern India. The riots started on 20 October 2021, mainly triggered by the vandalisations of "mosques" in the state. The situation deteriorated after several rallies were taken out by Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) on 21 and 26 October. Some miscreants attacked a small mosque, some shops and houses belonging to families from the minority community during the rally. Section 144 was imposed soon after. Background 83.40% of Tripura's population is Hindu, with a significant number of Hindus migrating from Bangladesh. Locals see the recent violence in Tripura as a response to recent violence against Hindus in neighboring Bangladesh's Comilla District. Censorship in India has taken various forms throughout its history. Tek Fog is an alleged mobile phone software application supposedly used by the India's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). It was first purported by Indian news and opinion website ''The Wire'', who has since suspended, and later formally retracted the story, due to cooked up stories and alleged discrepancies in the material used. ''The Wire'' also issued a formal apology to its readers and asked for a formal donation. The app The supposed purpose of the software is to infiltrate social media platforms and promote favourable viewpoints through misinformation targeting users perceived to be BJP party opponents.
