Edithburgh is a small town on the south-east corner of Yorke Peninsula situated on the coastline of Salt Creek Bay, in the state of South Australia. Edithburgh is about west of Adelaide across Gulf St Vincent, but away by road. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 516 of which 454 lived in its town centre. Edithburgh is in the Yorke Peninsula Council, the South Australian House of Assembly electoral district of Narungga and the Australian House of Representatives Division of Grey. History In the Narangga language of the Indigenous Narungga people, Edithburgh was known by the place name Pararmarati. Some sources give the pronunciation "Barram-marrat-tee". The first European pioneers arrived in the 1840s and were sheep graziers and pastoralists. With closer settlement, in 1869 the Marine Board fixed a site for a jetty to service the developing farming district. Sultana Point, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Sultana Point is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the Yorke Peninsula immediately adjoining the western head of Gulf St Vincent about west of the state capital of Adelaide. Its boundaries were created in November 2011 in response to a request from the then District Council of the Yorke Peninsula to “formally recognise this long established community.” The locality is bounded to the north by Hilsea Road and by Wattle Bay Road to the west. At the 2016 census, the locality shared a population of 516 with the adjoining locality of Edithburgh . Honiton, South Australia
__NOTOC__ Honiton is a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located on the south coast of Yorke Peninsula immediately adjoining Investigator Strait about west of the state capital of Adelaide and about west of the Edithburgh town centre. Its boundaries were created in May 1999. The name derives from the former government town of Honiton which was proclaimed on 27 April 1876, which ceased on 26 September 1982 and whose site is within the locality’s extent. The former government town’s name itself is reported as being derived from Honiton, a town located in Devonshire, England. Honiton’s coastal boundary with Investigator Strait includes coastal features such as Troubridge Hill and Troubridge Point. The area was known as Troubridge in 1871 when the land was first released for farming before the town of Honiton was surveyed in August 1874. Gulf St Vincent
Gulf St Vincent, sometimes referred to as St Vincent Gulf, St Vincent's Gulf or Gulf of St Vincent, is the eastern of two large inlets of water on the southern coast of Australia, in the state of South Australia, the other being the larger Spencer Gulf, from which it is separated by Yorke Peninsula. On its eastern side the gulf is bordered by the Adelaide Plains and the Fleurieu Peninsula. Description To the south it is defined by a line from Troubridge Point on Yorke Peninsula to Cape Jervis on Fleurieu Peninsula. Troubridge Island
Troubridge Island is an island located in the south west corner of Gulf St Vincent in South Australia near the eastern edge of the Troubridge Shoals off the east coast of Yorke Peninsula about southeast by east of the town of Edithburgh It is notable for being a site of an operating lighthouse from 1856 until 2002 and as a site for a sea bird rookery. Since 1982, the island has been part of the Troubridge Island Conservation Park. Coobowie
__NOTOC__ Coobowie is a town in the Australian state of South Australia near the south-eastern tip of Yorke Peninsula. Coobowie was proclaimed in 1875. Coobowie comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "wild fowl water". At the 2011 census, Coobowie shared a population of 220 with other localities. Coobowie's current outlook is to create many new features including making improvements to the foreshore play area. The protected area known as the Coobowie Aquatic Reserve is partly located within Coobowie with the remainder being located in the adjoining bay, Salt Creek Bay. Charles Thomas McGlew
Charles Thomas McGlew (1870–1931), a South Australian merchant and exporter, was the first to export barley from Australia. Origins Born at Redfern, Sydney, in 1870, he was a son of Cornelius Stanley McGlew (1839–1924), an English-born mining surveyor and inventor who discovered minerals in N.S.W. and Queensland, particularly tin deposits, and whose name is perpetuated in McGlew Street, Stanthorpe, Queensland. Standard Salt Company As a youth he was apprenticed as a shipbroker for the Orient Steam Navigation Company. He moved to South Australia in 1900 and commenced trading as a merchant and exporter. McGlew was a pioneer in the salt industry in South Australia, having established in 1903 the Standard Salt Company which from 1912 operated a busy refinery at Edithburgh, exporting to Russia among other places. Yorketown is a town and a locality in the Australian state of South Australia located in the southern Yorke Peninsula about west of the state capital of Adelaide and about south of the municipal seat of Maitland. At the 2016 census, the locality had a population of 969 of which 642 lived in its town centre. History Yorketown began as a private sub-division in section 85 of the cadastral unit of the Hundred of Melville in 1872. Its name was declared by the Surveyor General of South Australia as an official place name on 16 November 1995. County of Fergusson is a cadastral unit located in the Australian state of South Australia which spans Yorke Peninsula south of Price. It was proclaimed in 1869 by Governor Fergusson after whom the county was named.
