Edgecombe County Public Schools (previously called Edgecombe County Schools) is a Pre-kindergarten, PK–Twelfth grade, 12 graded school district serving Edgecombe County, North Carolina. It was formed in 1993 from the merger of the old Edgecombe County Schools and Tarboro City Schools systems. The system's nine schools serve 7,477 students as of the 2010–11 school year. History The Edgecombe County Public Schools system developed from the merger of the old Edgecombe County Schools and Tarboro, North Carolina, Tarboro City Schools. At the same time, a merger push was happening in neighboring Nash County, North Carolina, Nash County. The movements in both counties had been going on for years, motivated in part by declining enrollments in Rocky Mounty City Schools, but disagreements focused on district borders. Edgecombe County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 48,900. Its county seat is Tarboro. Edgecombe County is part of the Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The county was formed in 1741 from Bertie County. It was named for Richard Edgcumbe, a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1701 to 1742 and a lord of the treasury, who became 1st Baron Richard Edgecombe in 1742. In 1746 part of Edgecombe County became Granville County; in 1758 another portion became Halifax County; and in 1777 yet another part became Nash County. In 1855 the formation of Wilson County from parts of Edgecombe County, Johnston County, Nash County, and Wayne County reduced Edgecombe to its present size, with a minor boundary adjustments. Tarboro High School
Tarboro High School is a high school in Tarboro, North Carolina and is part of the Edgecombe County Public Schools district. It is one of four high schools in the district. History Tarboro High School was first established in 1881. Tarboro Colored School, which became known as W. A. Pattillo High School, served Tarboro's African American students. The schools merged and its teams integrated in 1970. In the 1970s the school had a high number of suspensions, affecting the academic performance of students. To address the issue, it became one of the earliest schools in the North Carolina and Virginia area to use in-school suspension in place of the traditional out of school suspension.
