Edgardo Arlequín Vélez
Edgardo Arlequín Vélez is a Puerto Rican politician and former mayor of Guayanilla. Arlequín is affiliated with the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) and was first elected as mayor in 2001. At the end of his term in 2015 he was accused of sexual misconduct, which forced him to resign on January 12, 2016. He was later pardoned by the former governor of Puerto Rico, Hon. Alejandro García Padilla. Political career After serving 4 years at the municipal assembly, Arlequín Vega was elected as Mayor of Guayanilla in the 2000 Puerto Rican general elections. To win the seat, Arlequín defeated the incumbent Ceferino Pacheco Giudicelli, from the New Progressive Party. The margin of the win was 236 votes (1.8%) in favor of Arlequín. Guayanilla, Puerto Rico
Guayanilla (, ) is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico located on the southern coast of the island, bordering the Caribbean Sea, south of Adjuntas, east of Yauco; and west of Peñuelas and about west of Ponce. Guayanilla is spread over 16 barrios and Guayanilla Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the Yauco Metropolitan Statistical Area. ''El Nuevo Día'' (English: ''The New Day'') is the newspaper with the largest circulation in Puerto Rico. It was founded in 1909 in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and today it is a subsidiary of GFR Media. The 2008 Puerto Rican general elections were held on Tuesday, November 4, 2008 to elect the officials of the Government of Puerto Rico that would serve for the next four years, most notably the Governor of Puerto Rico. The election was won by incumbent Resident Commissioner of Puerto Rico Luis Fortuño (from the New Progressive Party), who defeated the incumbent Governor, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá (from the Popular Democratic Party). Fortuño received 1,025,965 votes, and Acevedo Vilá 801,071. Also, most of the other positions were won by the candidates of the New Progressive Party, who ended up with a majority of seats in the Senate and the House of Representatives. The elections occurred after one term of what was called "shared government", as a result of the 2004 elections.
