Edgar W. Denison
Edgar W. Denison (August 31, 1904 – August 14, 1993) was a conservationist, amateur botanist and naturalist who was an early proponent of the value of the use of native plants in cultivated landscapes and in preserving and restoring biodiversity in natural and disturbed habitats. He provided text as well as many photographs and illustrations for the handbook, ''Missouri Wildflowers'', published by Missouri Department of Conservation in 1972, and now in its 6th edition. Biography Edgar W. Denison was born in Stuttgart, Germany on August 31, 1904. His interest in nature was formed as a boy, when he would make frequent trips with his father to Switzerland, and became “fascinated with the roses and edelweiss he saw while hiking.” “I am a mountain goat by nature,” he once told an interviewer. Missouri Department Of Conservation
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Conservation Commission were created by Article IV Sections 40-42 of the Missouri Constitution, which were adopted by the voters of the state in 1936 as Amendment 4 to the constitution. The Commission is vested with control, management, restoration, conservation, and regulation of fish, forest, and wildlife resources of the state. The Department of Conservation owns and oversees hatcheries, sanctuaries, refuges, and reservations, and enforces the state wildlife code. The Commission consists of four individuals appointed by the Governor of Missouri to serve unpaid 6-year terms. No more than two of the individuals may be from the same political party. Missouri is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States. Shaw Nature Reserve
Shaw Nature Reserve, formerly known as Shaw Arboretum, is a private non-profit nature reserve located in Gray Summit, Missouri, that is operated as an extension of the Missouri Botanical Garden. The first piece of land, , was purchased in 1925 when pollution from coal smoke in St. Louis threatened the Garden's live plant collection, especially the orchid collection. The orchids were moved to what was then known as the Gray Summit Extension in 1926. The pollution in St. Louis decreased with the waning use of coal for heat, making it unnecessary to move the rest of the live plant collection.
